OKay, so once the AOS is granted, SSN issued does that mean that the newly married K1 WIFE must then get a US passport?

I have a passport, an Australian one, valid until 2010. Depending on where we travel, it is often in my best interest to travel on my Australian passport (etntry laws etc are different depending on where you are a citizen).

When my AUSTRALIAN passport expires in 2010 does that mean the validity of the US visa inside the passport needs to be reissued in my new Australian passort?

Once the AOS is issued, what will I have (in documented form) that indicates that I am now a US citizen (besides the SSN card)?

I have read that once the green card is issued, I then fall into the category of a 'Conditional Permanent Resident'.

The around the 2 year anniversary I will have to RE-INTERVIEW and RE-APPLY for a 'unconditional status'.

It states that if the unconditional status is not applied for (at the 2year anniversary) then the Conditional Permanent Resident Card will expire, thus resulting in possible deportation...

So my second question is: can I (the immigrant) apply for a US passport in the 2 year period before the unconditional status is granted?

So many questions! *grins*

But thanks in advance for all the advice....it keeps us from chasing our own tails.

Cheers!

You do not need to get US cistizenship if you do not want to. I believe you need to wait 3 years (?) to apply for citizenship. Until you are approved for citizenship you are still considered an Australian cistizen and need to travel on that passport.

Once you get your conditional greencard, you need to carry that with you when you travel outside the US. You will still be traveling on your Australian passport and will need to get visas for countries that require them.

90 days before your conditional greencard expires you need to apply to remove the conditions on your greencard. When you get approved for that you will get a 10 year greencard. I believe a year or so after that is when you can apply for US citizenship.

You can not get a US passport until you become a US Citizen.... you can not apply to become a Citizen until you have held a greencard for 3 years....

Kez

Cheers, thanks for that.

So by that, I will, in 2010 have to reapply to get a new Australian passport to travel on.

Will there be anything that I will need to get printed inside my Australian passport to prove that I have been granted a green card & a Conditional Permanent Resident Card?

To a fellow Aussie,

After your AOS of status is approved, you will receive a "greencard" in the mail. When you travel, you travel on your Australian passport, as an Australian citizen, When you enter the US, your provide your Australian passport & the greencard to the Immigration official. When you renew your Aussie passport, you still use the same greencard with your new passport.

If you choose to apply for US citizenship when you become available, you can have both an Australian & US passport - the only requirement it that when you enter Australia you use the Aussie passport, when you enter the US you use your US passport - as for visiting other countries, it's your choice whether you enter as an Australian or an American.
