Not all fat people are fat because they choose to be. There are many reasons for being overweight. You should try to be more understanding of others, rather that using put downs. Cos being thin doesn't make you a good person any more than being fat makes you a bad person.

For all the Texans, citing Texas in the post was hyperbole and just that. Its an epidemic across the south that stretches up to Detroit all the way to Baltimore.

The fact is that these people were from Texas that were sitting next to me and 30% of my seat was taken up by the body of this man. He could not lower the arm rest. The flight was delayed for 20 minutes while the airline brought more belt extensions. That just blew my mind! THE EXTENSIONS!

I go nuts if I don't fit in the pants I wore last year... It just makes me wonder what goes on in the minds of these people?

Do they have mirrors in their houses? Or is their minds eye blind?

M.

Why didn't you say that in the first place. :bonk: Seriously, I once saw a couple that weighed at least 450 lbs. each in short shorts. Now you can look any way you want but c'mon now. Even at my heaviest I never needed one belt extension, let alone two. How many extensions did they use, btw? I don't know if they've given up or what? Maybe they need someone to (gently) take them aside and try to get them exercising at least.

Does anyone really believe that someone that large doesn't have any clue that they are that large? Is anyone really stupid enough to believe that? Who cares? It's their business.

It's their business til they take up half my seat. I mean it's totally their choice to be however they want and do whatever they want, ant them taking up half my seat is about as crappy to me as someone blowing cigarette smoke in my face the whole flight I guess.

But to be fair that's not their fault - this is something the industry needs to address and handle, the airline dudes. I can't really expect someone to buy TWO seat tickets out of the goodness of their heart.

Now when it's someone I care about and love it's still their business but I'm butting my nose in, dang it.

Like my bro in law for example, now. He's been part of the family, started dating my sister, like 12 years ago. He was in amazingly good shape back then, muscular and quite thin and has like three black belts in three different martial arts or something, all that. I guess he gradually got bigger and bigger over the years but was never really a big health issue until about a couple years ago. And since he's married my sister two summers ago, he's only been getting bigger and bigger and is very inactive.

Now, they've got a six month old baby and when my sis asks him to please go upstairs and get something the baby needs, he'll pitch a fit and not do it because it exhausts him too much to go up the stairs, I think.

He spends all his time playing World of Warcraft when he's not at work, and eats basically the whole time.

He's now gotten to the point where he drinks BAKING SODA EVERY NIGHT because someone told him it was good for indigestion. He eats out of pieplates because they let him heap more food on them, eats two or three pieplates full of food each night for dinner. Then he takes baking soda because he has indigestion (I can't imagine why). You know what he does then? He goes and eats some **** more!!!!

And my dad says, because there's squeeky old wooden steps in the house and they live with my dad, that he can hear him getting up once or twice every single night. My dad'll go check it out and find that he's just eating, whole bags of chips or the rest of the massive amount of food for dinner, whatever, and playing WoW.

Does that every single day, is completely inactive, didn't at all used to be like that, and no matter what approach the family takes to trying to talk to him about it, from being really gentle to quite firm or whatever, he won't do a damn thing or address it. He just pitches a fit and whines and gets mad that you brought it up. We bought him a punching bag two christmases ago because he said he wanted to start trying to lose and get in shape, but couldn't afford the stuff he wanted. Whole family spent more than usual on a good bag and gloves and all this stuff he wanted. He hasn't used it ONCE. My dad went and got a chain and put it up for him and everything. Not ONCE.

There's no reason he should be 'messed up', it's not genetic at all as he was extremely fit before. It shouldn't be depression as he'd just gotten married, he's just had a baby, AND his mother has just moved back from Seattle to be close to them a fair few months ago. He's got all the support system he would need if he'd just open up about it. But he doesn't.

I don't know. I mean everyone's different, but there comes a point when someone's just being a completely self-destructive schmuck. That's cool, it's their "choice" and all, but sometimes that can severely affect their brand new wife who has to take care of the baby completely by herself, basically, and also their children who probably won't KNOW their father when they're grown because he'll be dead in like five years. This is just plain selfishness. Not to mention they're economically struggling, but they'd save probably hundreds a month if he didn't spend all their money on food!

Now, I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with being hefty and really I think Epicureans know how to live better than obsessed health freaks :P I think it's much more important to be active. Like for example my other bro in law, he's quite a large fellow too but he's a construction worker so gets lots of exercise - he doesn't refuse to help with the baby or help chop wood or feed the dogs (because he can't stoop) or any of that stuff because of his weight. So I guess it's in the mentality of the person. If you want to just become a huge amoeba that basically just automatically eats and does little to nothing else, and you refuse to accept help or talk about why you're doing that, really how long should people have to try to understand and help you?

I read somewhere that thin people who obsess over their weight see themselves larger than they are and a lot of people that are obese actually see themselves a lot smaller than they are

Well, I was reacting more to the "fat people are disgusting" vibe that I was getting. It usually pops up in any thread like this. Sorry, I should have been a little more clear with that. I also shouldn't post when I'm honked off.

It just makes me wonder what goes on in the minds of these people?

Do they have mirrors in their houses? Or is their minds eye blind?

M.

"This person" stresses out when she flies, wondering if she will sit beside someone like you. Someone who automatically thinks I am disgusting, and who automatically thinks that I don't care how I look. Someone who doesn't know that I used to be much heavier and who doesn't know how I've struggled with my weight and self esteem all my life. Someone who doesn't see me look at myself at the mirror and wish things were different, but I am ok with where I am right now and working towards being better.

That's what goes on in the mind of "this person". Just so you know.

Thank you for stating that fact julezabelle

btw... THIS used to be me.

And I eat more now than I did then. Just a whole lot differently.

I understand your frustrations with the seats and, you're right, that is unfair. I'd be the first to agree with you there. But your depiction of the events is really just cruel. It's not easy being that size and it's not easy living in a world full of people who judge you by appearance alone. There is no need for verbal bashing or name calling. I would imagine that anyone coming here and reading this thread that even thinks they're overweight would take great offense to the original post (some of the others were quite funny actually :lol). I know I did.

With someone who's 20 or 30 lbs. over, I can see that happening. But if someone is really obese it doesn't matter if you never look in a mirror. Your body is constantly going to remind you of how big you are. There's no ignoring how it feels when you're carrying around that much extra weight. It's in your feet, your breathing, your back, everywhere.

If someone could actually do that, I'd say their weight is probably one of their lesser worries. They have some serious mental issues going on.

Nah Mark&Steph I wasn't targeting you in my response or anything, I wasn't ranting or anything :P I just keep posting really irritatingly long posts that know no one reads. I have a really bad habit of typing/saying EVERYTHING I think, it's annoying :(

Kim, you look GREAT :) Congratulations! I mean I don't know how long ago you got all that weight off so maybe 'congratulations' is wrong but I'm really glad you got healthier. I hope you feel a lot better too.

I think it says a lot that you'd say you eat more now than you did then. I really do think a lot of this comes down to education...again, people have no idea what they're putting in their mouths, what sort of nutrients they need, how to keep metabolism up, etc. I've just started eating a lot healthier and trying to be active and stuff in the past year or two and I still don't have it right at all.

And I know it's extremely complicated and everybody has their own balance :( Myself I've gotten to where I obsess over weight more the other way, which I never used to be like before, and I hate it so I wish I could relax more. Last night I ate a pizza, first big splurge I've had in maybe a month, and I'm still feeling the effects of that today and felt really guilty and stupid and just physically blurgh about it. I mean I don't want it to be where I can't splurge sometimes, you know? I think maybe I've gone too far to the OTHER extreme or something - almost all days I get about 1200-1300 calories, very balanced and all, do all my exercising, but still feel like I haven't lost much at all. I think maybe my body's not getting enough so metabolism shuts down or something, but I'm scared to eat more and start gaining, too. Plus after awhile your body gets USED to not eating big heavy stuff so it feels bad actually to eat so much or different things.

So I totally think weight in general is a two-way street. I think obese people have a big problem (no pun intended :P) but I also think these little 100 pound girls might have a problem too. I read that overweight people who are active are actually more healthy and live longer than normal or lower weight people who are inactive, so weight isn't nearly everything.

I think food can be a vice and needs to be regulated just like smoking, alcohol, or drugs does. I don't smoke OR drink OR do drugs. Seems very boring. Maybe I should start :D
