PS I am so motherfcuking hungry right now (so much so that the profanity is definitely appropriate) but this thread is reminding me why I'm on this diet. I took three months off and gained 10 pounds soooo.... obviously I need it. Thanks, bigoted, meanspirited anti-fat person who posted this!

Yeah, it was the cruelest thing of all to do! Well, the next best thing is Diet Dr. Pepper and I've got that on hand.

I just was reading the post on children on the plane and I remembered a flight from Phoenix to Houston. I got on the plane and the two people sitting next to me were morbidly obese! I was disgusting to feel that blubber rub up against me and the couple made me nauseous as they did not stop eating. I had to sit on one cheek and half lean into the isle to give this couple room. I was going to make a stink about this but I looked around and noticed that everyone around was way over weight! I mean real fat! It was disgusting. I totally lost my appetite and did not eat the meal.

Was this an anomaly or is this what the great state of Texas has become? I am a former resident, but its been almost 20 years since I lived there.

I'd like to believe that you don't suffer from size prejudice and are unaware of the manner in which your post will be perceived. You raise some interesting points so I thought that I might address them. There seems to be a question of whether you were upset at being cramped on the airplane or the behaviour of those next to you or as it appears, you generalized it to the large people of the state of Texas. I am not a small individual so I may be a bit biased but would you have felt better if the couple was physically fit and large? I sympathize with you over the eating habits of others but I 've seen many people half my size consume food at an unbelieveable rate, frequently in a loud, discourteous manner. For the record, as Snowytater has mentioned, most morbidly obese people don't eat as much as their normal weight counterparts, in many cases they eat less than half the amount. But food comsumption habits (one large meal will pack on the pounds) or a diet high in fat and carbohydrates are to blame. Exercise also plays an important part in an increasingly sedentary society especially for those predisposed to obesity. There may also be metabolic factors. I should point out that airplane seats have been reduced in size to increase the number of passengers that may be booked on any given flight. I don't like people rubbing up against me either, be they physically fit, cadaverously thin or morbidly obese. I'd like to believe that you did not mean that these people had blubber (whales have blubber, human beings do not) only that their ample frames confined and prevented you from enjoying your journey. Just a few points to consider.

I'm not going to generalize, but I do remember arriving back in the United States after more than a year in Brazil. I had a few hours' layover in Houston. It was the strangest thing. Everyone was huge. And it was like 5:30 am and they were lining up at the Krispy Kreme stand. I felt real culture shock.

I know exactly what you mean. I spent 7 years in So. Am. and when I can back I was shocked, almost all of my trips were to Miami and NYC during those 7 years so I had not realized the epidemic that has taken place here in the US. I hope I don't catch it.

For all the Texans, citing Texas in the post was hyperbole and just that. Its an epidemic across the south that stretches up to Detroit all the way to Baltimore.

The fact is that these people were from Texas that were sitting next to me and 30% of my seat was taken up by the body of this man. He could not lower the arm rest. The flight was delayed for 20 minutes while the airline brought more belt extensions. That just blew my mind! THE EXTENSIONS!

I go nuts if I don't fit in the pants I wore last year... It just makes me wonder what goes on in the minds of these people?

Do they have mirrors in their houses? Or is their minds eye blind?
