Is everyone in Texas FAT?

The thing to remember about Texas is that most people in Texas are not originally from Texas or even multi-generational residends. It is a transient state of migrants and has been since the invention and widespread use of the air conditioner. As General Sherman said after the American Civil War, "If I owned Hell and Texas...I'd live in Hell and rent out Texas."

In my hometown of Houston roughly 1/4 of the population is foreign born. A little less than half of the foreign born are illegal aliens. Most of the present day native born American residents were born outside of the city and state.

I'm sure this probably more or less jibes with the other major cities in the state and the fact that the cities make up a big chunk of the Texas population.

So what is the point? I don't know. Draw your own conclusions. Maybe fat people are drawn to Texas like moths to a light?

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

It's really upsetting to see that there are NO states in that CDC graphic on the lower end of the chub rate. And interesting that there are a few NE states in the dark blue category, yet nestled among them is RI which is in the higher chubby category.

Texas has the second highest population of any state in the U.S. (only California has more people), so it's not unreasonable to think that there would be a fair number of "fat" individuals in this state. However, there are also many average and thin folks as well.

Honestly, I've seen people who've been all sorts of weight here. I think it'd be a fallacy to say that just because you've seen a handful of Texans in a place as transient as an airport, that all Texans are overweight. You don't even know for a fact that the people you saw even were Texans, since you saw them on a plane and in an airport -- just because the airport was in Texas means little. I'm a Texan and I've been in airports all over the U.S. and in Canada. What does that tell you?

Unless you've spent any significant amount of time here, you can't accurately gauge if people tend to be on the heavier or lighter side.

I'm not going to generalize, but I do remember arriving back in the United States after more than a year in Brazil. I had a few hours' layover in Houston. It was the strangest thing. Everyone was huge. And it was like 5:30 am and they were lining up at the Krispy Kreme stand. I felt real culture shock.

Three things...

1. Using "everyone" is a generalization. Whether or not you meant to do it is something else entirely, but it still is, regardless of intent.

2. Just as I pointed out in my first post, how do you know the people you saw were Texans? You were in IAH at that time and you're not a Texan. It's certainly possible for someone to be overweight and looking to buy doughnuts at the airport on their way home, isn't it?

3. It might just be that you noticed those who were overweight, since they'd probably be more likely to line up for Krispy Kreme at that hour. That really has very little to do with someone being Texan; it's merely the eating habits of people who're larger than average.

Krispy Kreme is AWESOME. omg.

I DO tend to whine a bit about genetics, but only in my head...I think I'm 'naturally disposed' to being a bit bigger even if my saying that might make people roll their eyes :( But yeh everyone in my family, generations and generations back, is a bit bigger. My mom's a bit bigger and she eats like NOTHING.

Whereas my SO, god, he's absolutely tiny and probably always will be, as his father's tiny as well and in his mid-50s. But he eats ALL DAY LONG. He walks around a good bit but not like an exorbitant amount.

The first time I got him krispy kreme donuts here, this 125 pound man ate one creme stuffed, chocolate covered one (You know, the best ones :P), which is where most people stop and feel sick, right?

Then he ate like five more.

And then said "blurgh...sugar", stopped, and went in and ate a huge dinner like 20 minutes later.

And this is pretty normal for him and yeh he's tiny so I hate him. The whole 'marriage' thing is really just a plot to murder him for being unfair. :D

Summer 2001 - met my Scottish boy

December 18th, 2007 - proposal in Madrid's Botanical Gardens with a duck standing behind him going 'food?'

January 18th, 2008 - I-129F sent to VSC

January 31st, 2008 - received NOA1, issued Jan. 24 :)

February 24th, 2008 - NOA2; omgwtfbbqlolz

February 29th, 2008 - NVC letter sent

I think it's kind of obvious that not EVERYONE in Texas is fat. It's clear hyperbole to make a point. We can all see from the graphic that at least 70% of Texans are NOT obese.

wasn't it the supersize movie where the guy got stats and houston was one of the cities with the highest number of obese people? it was that or had the most mcdonalds.

but i wouldn't say its all of texas. austin is the most unlike texas part of texas. which is why i like it.

I was exaggerating, not generalizing. My point was that I wasn't going to generalize and say they were Texans. Which I never did. I'm just talking about something that happened IN Texas. I noticed a large group of these Amazon peope were college students from a school in Texas, and we all know not everyone goes to college in their hometown. Don't be so sensitive! I'm not insulting your state, which I have never even been to except IAH. It was more a statement about Americans in general, which is what most people there were.
