Is everyone in Texas FAT?

I just was reading the post on children on the plane and I remembered a flight from Phoenix to Houston. I got on the plane and the two people sitting next to me were morbidly obese! I was disgusting to feel that blubber rub up against me and the couple made me nauseous as they did not stop eating. I had to sit on one cheek and half lean into the isle to give this couple room. I was going to make a stink about this but I looked around and noticed that everyone around was way over weight! I mean real fat! It was disgusting. I totally lost my appetite and did not eat the meal.

Was this an anomaly or is this what the great state of Texas has become? I am a former resident, but its been almost 20 years since I lived there.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

My former wife just left Texas on a plane. When she returns, I'll ask her if she concurs with your theory.

...Ahem...

Ignoring the err...bluntness and possibly construed rudeness :\

And taking into account that yes some people do have medical/health reasons that they're overweight and can't help it so much, and that would really really really suck, and I feel really bad for them...

I was the person in the other topic to bring up Texas airports and the incredible majority incredible obesity of all the people I saw in the particular airport I was at, the one time :(

So from this one experience yes, it does seem like there's lots and lots of seriously concerning obesity issues in Texas. I think everyone's acknowledged that the US has its own obesity crisis, basically (which I think hopefully might be getting a lot better now, at least with the young generation and the generations to come...hopefully) and I think Texas might top the list of heaviest states.

There's so many issues to it though that's just really sad :( I completely understand how people get overweight in this country and I'm still a bit chub too and trying to get it off, and was a really big kid. It's difficult to get natural-coming exercise here, we don't have awesome public transport and sidewalks (not even sidewalks!) in most places. You're forced to drive. Also, it seems like we tend to work a few more hours a week/a few more weeks a year than European countries; I think this stresses us out more and leaves us less time and no energy to do active things we'd have otherwise liked to do.

I think emotional eating is big. It was for me. When you work a 10-12 hour day once you factor in commute and stuff, don't have the money or optimism or energy to go out and do more active things, then you sit with your TV and find comfort in your cheetohs.

How much you can afford to spend on groceries is huge - my family's blue collar so it's no wonder I was really big when I was little, despite lots of outside place. I grew up on the cheaper things - lots of Chef Boyardee, Hamburger Helper, Kraft mac and cheese, canned chillis and meats, horrendous TV dinners, little debbies, etc etc. Plus I'm in the south, where we traditionally must fry EVERYTHING, so on the rare occasion we had a vegetable it was usually coated in cornmeal or flour and oil...

Think education on it is huge too. People don't know what they're putting in their mouths. And once those bad habits are cemented when you're a kid it's hard to change later.

When I was in Texas in the airport I sat across from a guy that probably weighed about 400 pounds, if not more. I watched him devour not one but three of those mega-muffin things in bakeries now, that are so so bad for you. I think that's well over your daily alloted calories and fat, and it took him less than 5 minutes to eat them.

I mean I know people have a lot of issues emotionally and physically and medically and from stress and boredom and everything else, but way too many people say it's not their fault they're overweight and they can't help it. For most people this isn't true at all and they really need to start taking responsibility for themselves if they don't want to die when they're 40 :(
