I read some information into a possible link between autism and pitocin (a synthetic form of oxytocin), which is commonly used to induce labor in women. Oxytocin, which the woman's body naturally produces stops being produced when pitocin is introduced. Among many functions for both mother and child, oxytocin stimulates mental alertness in babies when they are breastfed, causes the uterus to contract, helps to trigger an emotional bond between mother and child, and acts as a powerful anti-depressant. Researchers have used oxytocin on autistic children and found them to become more responsive and aware of other people's facial expressions. Interesting stuff....nature, that is.

Damn good explanation Steven.

As long as you don't say oxycontin instead of oxytocin we're good!

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Glad the water issue isn't just me, then.

Is sparkling water an acceptable drink for a macho man about town? My male friends used to question my occasional flirtations with gin & tonic. Comfortable tho I am with my robust sexuality, I don't plan to go out of my way to have the piss taken every time I enter a high-testosterone Brew City bar.

There's Pelligrino Sparkling water. Dunno if it is macho enough for you...but you could make your own label and stick it to the bottle though.

I think there's a possible correlation between postpartum depression and women who can't breastfeed. Many women who suffer from it feel no emotional connection to the baby. Also worth mentioning...the woman's body produces oxytocin during love making as well. I think our emotions are very much a chemical reaction.

Want me to explain the neurochemistry of that do ya? :content:

OK... in a nutshell:

"The most important stimulus for release of hypothalamic oxytocin is initiated by physical stimulation of the nipples or teats. "

(that just cracks me up)

+ Sex -> Hypothalamic neurons increase Oxytocin synthesis and secretion -> Milk secretion increases, intraventricular concentration of oxytocin increases, CSF concentration increases -> Catecholamines are reduced via competition for receptors on postsynaptic neurons in periventricular brain regions that affect mood. One of these moods induces maternal behavior so woah boy be careful you don't get too happy there or you'll be suckling...

Wow. I can imagine so many possible links or correlations there...men's attraction to fuller breasts (implication of lactation), a person's emotional connection with food, women who want to get breast implants.

LOL... Actually, its physiological, not anatomical...

Since the oxytocin is not produced in the mammary glands, its the stimulatory input that matters..................................................
