Oath scheduling question

We were happy to get an interview notice today, for a naturalization interview on May 30.

However, we've got international travel already scheduled for June 19-28.

We know that the San Francisco office schedules oath ceremonies on Tuesdays, and typically they'll be a week or more after the interview. Guessing here, but it seems there's a good chance the oath ceremony will be scheduled for two days before our departure.

After becoming a citizen, one must have a US passport to enter the US. This is the law, and besides, they take your Green Card, leaving no other way to get into the US with the old foreign passport. But it seems like we're unlikely to be able to get a US passport expedited so fast, and even if it's possible to get the passport in two days, we'd rather not put up with the fees and hassle.

We'd like to delay the oath ceremony until after returning from our trip. We can take the trip with the Green Card, come back and do the oath to become a citizen, and then apply for a US passport.

Does anyone know how hard this is to do? Do we tell them at the interview appointment?

We'd prefer NOT to reschedule the interview and civics exam.

I know of someone who had pretty much the same problem and was able to reschedule at the L.A. office. I would assume that your office would also allow it.

I hope it works out for you. Good luck.

congrats with letter! i am sure it's legal to reschedule it, but -

at the oath they ask about any trips, criminal things and other changes to application made between interview and oath - make sure you research every detail before making the trip.

You can reschedule it. Sometimes you get the oath date at the interview itself so you can talk to your interviewer and reschedule. Some people actually have to wait for a letter which should have instructions on how to reschedule. I would suggest after your interview is done to talk to your interviewer and see what he/she suggests. Good luck...

I am sure you can reschedule, btw I would tell them at the interview since the trip has already been planned. That way they know, you look honest about your plans and they probably would take a note about it and not schedule your ceremony then in the first place.

Had to do something similar for my AOS in 2004, my religious wedding in Italy was planned and I had no interview date yet, so I asked not to have it scheduled while I would be overseas. The Local Office wanted a letter from me with the dates and the explanation and that was it.

ETA: Congrats
