Do children on planes bother you?
by Grant Martin Mar 20th 2008 @ 4:15PM

114455445_9fd0d62f76.jpgI have to admit, every time I used to fly overseas I was afraid of sitting in the proximity of children. Usually I'm one of the first people to board, so after getting my electronics and reading material in order, I used to nervously watch passengers boarding, terrified that a couple with a newborn child was going to sit next to me and that the child would wail across the entire ocean.

This has happened to me more than once, and it really really sucks. But over the past few years I've come to terms with the frustration a bit. I try to think that couples traveling with children need to be on the road, perhaps for a family function or emergency and that they're doing everything in their power to see to their children. Hopefully, they're sensitive to the passengers around them and we in turn can be flexible for that.

As it turns out, I'm not the only person sensitive to screaming kids in my cabin. Our friends over at Airfarewatchdog recently posted a survey asking whether families with children should be put in a different section of the aircraft, concentrating the ruckus into one portion of the plane. Perhaps this would result in more peace for the other passengers.

Surprisingly, well over 90% of the polled readers said that they would support another cabin for families with children. That's a pretty definitive result.

Not that something like that will ever happen. Airlines wont discriminate against families traveling with children and even if they could, it would be a political and bureaucratic nightmare to implement. But it's in interesting idea.

 Yessssssssssssssss.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I don't mind kids as long as they behave well. I once sat right next to a 5 year old that thought it's funny to kick me, and the mom said that's ok because she doesn't want to say no to her child, that's bad for development. I had some serious bruises on my thighs... Next time that happens I will honestly complain to the flight attendants. I would be ashamed if my child acted like that!!!!

I don't have a problem with babies, they cry every once in a while, nothing the parents can do about. And well-behaved older children are actually fun to talk with!

i actually had a 10 hour flight recently. There was a MENA dude and american wife. The dude and 2 of the young kids were in the row behind me. the wife and another child were in the row next to him across the aisle. The kids were out of control beating the sh*t out of my seat, slamming the tray table and STICKING THIER FINGERS IN MY EAR.... the dude didnt do anything. everytime myself or the person next to me seemed irritated the MENA dude said something to his wife and she had to take control. He refused to do anything. i felt so bad for the wife. i finally resorted to drinking a bunch of scotch and things didnt seem so bad. Funny thing, the wife and kids spoke 3 languages and dude could only speak his mother tongue.

sad sad sad... I would definately support a cabin for families if possible. the families need the relieved stress of not having to worry about other passengers and the children need to be children.

I dont like kids too much on planes...the first time i ever flew to america i was on my own, 18 and sat next to a baby and its mom who was continually breast feeding it! since then i check in online exactly 24hours before and get a good seat that is far away from where families would be, and i always get onto the plane right at the end - no need to wait in line standing up that way!

I just ask when checking in to make sure there isn't a child in the seat next to me. Never had a problem having my seat moved. As for people who are overweight they drive me crazy but just imagine how embarrassing and uncomfortable it must be for them to fit into those tiny seats and try not to take up the space we have also paid for.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

Children, not so baad as long as they behave.....

Fat people, that's a whole different story.............

OH YEA!!! That can be a big problem too!! I had a flight about a year ago where my neighbor was so big,, he was hanging over into my seat. He apologized and i was VERY understanding. However, when the flight attendant refused to reseat me, i had to make a scene with the airline staff explaining that I am an elite flyer loyal to their airline and I paid for a FULL seat and if i couldnt get a FULL seat of space, i needed compensation.

They gave me business class.

I COMPLETELY understand. That's why I get so stressed out when I travel with my child. I am so worried that she is going to annoy the people next to us. On my last flight, I apologized to the man sitting next to me as I sat down. He indicated that it didn't matter, but when I got back from taking my daughter to the bathroom to change her diaper, he had moved. I didn't blame him one bit and it certainly made my life easier to have an empty seat next to me. She is older now and I'm dreading this next flight. She has started throwing tantrums. Sorry if you are on my flight from Beijing this summer.

I've been on baby flights from Beijing where there must have been 15 or 20 newly adopted babies all screaming at once. Somehow, babies don't annoy me much. I can't stand groups of teenagers on a tour, or worse yet, drunken adults traveling in packs.

There was a kid screaming almost all the way from Paris to New York on Sunday. I don't mean like a baby crying, I mean like a nine-hour wordless temper tantrum. I don't know what was up. Totally inexcusable, unless it was autism or something.

As for fat people, I think I might be a genius but I've devised the perfect solution: arm rests that go all the way down. Most people can probably squeeze in there, but they overlap because of the armrest not going all the way down. Why, why don't they offer these? The arm space could be a problem, but probably not for most people. That's something that would also be a problem for broad-shouldered men as ewll.

Nopes, never really had a problem with other peoples' kids on planes, and my oldest is a better traveller than I am. =)

As for the ones I go "uh oh" over and try to hide in my seat to minimize the chanses of them having a boarding pass with a seating number next to mine *yeah, great logic, I know* I think the slimy, leering, tipsy men are the worst, and then come the stinkers. You know the persons that smell like old gym locker room as well as the ones who have poured a whole bottle of perfume/after shave on themselves. And let's not forget the ones that are obviously sick and caughing all over...

stay with the same airline alliance.... get the 25k per year to get elite status, which shouldnt be hard considering where all our partners come from. You will get complimentary upgrades to first class for all domestic flights and prefered seating. Use www.seatguru.com to find the best seats and you have the weapons to fight the seating problem.

BTW. any northwest flight that operates an airbus a330 for international flights, seat 41g is the best in coach.

I definitely earn more than 25k on Northwest and I don't get any benefits. It's probably the worst airline I've ever used. It's really funny, if you grow up in Minneapolis, you don't realize other airlines treat you better and aren't staffed by surly, cranky (and really underpaid) people. Moving to another city opens up a whole new world of Air Frances and British Airways.

When my mom travels she travels with all of my smaller sisters and brother (four total not counting me) has been going on since my youngest sister was one years old......we are always thanked by the airlines when she is getting off for having such sweet children........lol i guess they just don't get it one look from mom can stop a grown person lol what i hate on flights is sitting next to someone that drinks hard liquor i hate the smell of it........and then they try to talk to me after they are a few to many under the influence......by that time refusing to answer only makes them want to talk more. i have been know to answer them in Spanish so they leave me alone lol....and if they don't they don't expect an answer cuz the stupid girl cant understand English.........and that can bring on a complete other set of problems lol.....i kind of wish they had a cabin for non drinkers so that we dont have to smell it if it is uncomfortable for us......... :)
