AA/RJA to Jordan

Hey all. I'm not getting a good answer from either AA or RJA. I have a friend who wants to take 2 extra bags (so 5 in all-- the two checked regular, the carry on and then 2 extra bags). AA said their system is down and RJA is the one who sets the rules anyway-- call them. RJA said it's $150/bag, but wouldn't say if you could take 2 extra, and told me he was in Jordan and was reading a paper the US gave them and could not answer anything else. So my basic question is is it more to take that second bag and is it possible to take the second bag? AA acted like that was fine but said to call RJA anyway.

Can you call Jordan Travel I beleive they are in New York and ask them since they book for RJA and see if they would be able to answer your question. I know that everything that I ever read was that you would just have to pay for other bags by the weight as they were considered excess weight after the two bags. Sorry I can't be of much help.

I am leaving tonight from JFK. I have taken RJ for the past 7/8 years that I have gone to Jordan.

From what I know, all domestic airlines yield to RJ rules. But they should be no different then dometic carriers.

Of course you can take as many bags as you'd like. But you have to pay for the extra bags and any extra weight. You are allowed two bags checked. No bag can be over 70 pounds at any time, but anything over the alloted 50lbs is considered extra. I recall being told that you can pay $25.00 US per bag over the 50lbs and up to the 70. But the extra bags will cost I think what you were quoted $150, for 50 pounds of weight. A little trick....you are only allowed 1 carry on bag. But I take may backpack and also a the standard carry on luggage (wheels). They usually take the wheeled one at the gate and give me a bag claim ticket, as they place the bag in the cargo hold. At QAIA, it comes on the conveyor belt with my other bags. My backpack, sometimes I put my laptop in it, sometimes not, I have other things in it, but not excessive. THis trick will work 9 out of 10 times. And the chances of sucess depend on the time of season you are flying and the # of passengers on the plane.

Yeah, one of the bags will be mine filled with gifts for my Dh's family. She can rearrange it however she likes. So in this case we need the 4th checked bag and it will probably be pretty large-- like they would never let it past the counter. I'll let her know that though. I actually have used that trick domestically :) It worked pretty well.

ok, I'm not "getting" the backpack trick... Maybe its just been a long week so I apologize for being slow. Do u wear it and it doesn't count as a carry-on? or they count it anyway? I'm confused. I will def use this if I can understand it lol (i need a nap)

You take a backpack and a small wheelie luggage through security up to the plane. When you go to board the plane they tell you your luggage is too big and then they tell you you have to check it there-- so they give you a little ticket and put it under the plane. It ends up not being counted in your official luggage total. They've gotten stricter though and it's harder to do this. It works sometimes and others not. The rule change of not allowing more than one carryon (either a purse OR a bag, not both) is what killed this IMO. I figured this out by accident as I am sure many people did.

Julianna is correct...just don't let them see it :-) Wear dark clothing if you have a dark backpack! Additionally, you can put a laptop in there....briefcases/purses are not counted as the 1 carry on. You know those shoulder bags for women, call that your purse....you can put heavy things in there. That is how I control the weight of my bags...especially when all my cousins want Twizzlers...I put them in my carryon rolling back. That thing usually weighs more than my checked bags and it's 1/3 the size. LOL

But on the return flight, they are very strict in Amman. They check you before you clear immigration, and will send you back to the counter to check it and pay for it. If you utilize the city terminal (see RJ website) you get 10kg extra in one checked bag for free to North America. Worth it if you bring lots of stuff back. :-)

They changed that rule as of last time I went.. did they change it back? It was now only ONE thing-- a purse OR a bag OR a briefcase, etc.

I just went through in January with my inlaws. What the airline told us is that you can take more than one extra bag however if you bring more than one extra bag you MUST call the airline first and let them know so they can make sure there is room otherwise it won't be accepted. We ended up paying $110 for each extra bag they brought and they had a total of 7 bags for 2 people. You are also allowed to cram 40 lbs in your carry-on and you get one personal item too like a purse. They initially told us it would $150 for and extra bag and $110 for any bag over 50lbs not to exceed 70lbs however when we got to the airport no one knew what to do. They ended up charging us $110 per bag.

Now when they arrived in Jordan, RJA checked the receipts and said they didnt pay enough and wanted to charge them the remainder of the money. They didn't end up paying because they had some connections at the airport and got out of it.

Just be prepared because everyone will give you conflicting information and you will get another story at the airport and yet again another in Jordan. Come prepared with lots of cash!

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

Thanks JP! Yeah, i think I'll send some extra money with her just in case. This suitcase is on a one-way trip and will remain there. This is just cheaper than mailing!!
