Crane High School students, friends and supporters hold a memorial March 10 outside the school for student Ruben Ivy, 18, who was shot and killed outside the Chicago school on March 7.

CHICAGO - The morning trip to school for dozens of teenagers here had all the normal signs: bleary eyes, oversized jackets zipped up against the chill, the seemingly endless wait for the bus.

But there was tension underlying the routine: The trip was under the watchful eyes of parents, an alderman, a principal and police.

The escort to and from Crane Tech High School this week, dubbed "Operation Safe Passage" is just one of the ways Chicago is dealing with a wave of violence that has stunned the city.

I also just noticed on the news that 4 people where shot in Maryland. Stuff like this happens almost daily in the DC area.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Its no secret (or surprise) that Baltimore, MD and DC are among the most dangerous cities in the country for gang-related and violent crime.

You would think the politicians (many of whom are based in DC) would have done something to clean up their own city!

And Chicago's gang problem has been ongoing for decades. Far worse than NYC.

Just drove by Crane two days ago.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I am sick of seeing politicians talk a big game just to get voted in and then deliver jack ####. It is a bloody national embarrassment and disgrace that the nation's capital, the center of the country, has such a large crime problem and is so run down.

The crime rate in Manhattan is nothing like it was in the 70's - in the outer burroughs though (Bronx, Brooklyn etc) it still has a strong prescence.

What the hell are the politicians, mayors, police chiefs doing...

My brother in law volunteers as a cop and he was told to turn a blind eye in certain areas because they don't want the area, crime stats, to look bad. Effectively allowing the area to deteriorate further.

I didn't find DC to be run-down at all - I thought it was a beautiful city. Great architecture and historic sites.

Police presence is the key. They need foot patrol, mobile cops, patrol cars as well as 24/7 surveillance of public areas. Plus tougher laws and dynamic curfews.

How many people need to die before someone takes some serious action to fix the crime problems in cities here.

Don't know much about the Bronx, but Brooklyn is very safe nowadays - don't know why you think otherwise.

A couple of politicians should do the trick. :innocent:

Yes West DC but East DC is really bad. As is Prince George county in Maryland. You have some of the richest and poorest people at opposite ends of the same street in DC.

Or their families. Only then will the bastards demand change and make it an 'election issue'..

Does the violent crime originate from the rich or poor end of the street?
