CLEVELAND - A man who pleaded guilty to murder and later was convicted of heroin trafficking is one of two candidates who have advanced to a runoff for an open City Council seat.

John Boyd will face interim Councilwoman Mamie Mitchell in the April 22 election to replace a councilwoman who stepped down to become the council's clerk. Mitchell received 477 votes and Boyd 122 in Tuesday's six-candidate special primary in an east side ward.

The Ohio attorney general's office says it's not clear whether he could hold the $70,000-a-year council seat if elected.

Boyd, 50, pleaded guilty in 1973 to second-degree murder for a killing during a robbery and was sentenced to 15 years to life. His sentence was commuted by Gov. James A. Rhodes, and he served less than eight years.

He later was convicted of heroin trafficking, forgery, theft and receiving stolen property. He was released from prison in 2000 and was released from parole in 2005, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

Boyd says he now devotes himself to working with troubled teens.
