Well, if we're comparing American and Canadian cities, we should look at Windsor (typically considered Detroit's "sister" city in many respects). Although I've never been there, from the Canadians I've spoken to -- including my wife -- the differences between Detroit and Windsor are minimal, at best.

My wife and I met in Windsor. I visited there more than a half a dozen times, spending many days at a time. I drove around Windsor a lot.

It is nothing like Detroit. It's blue collar, appears economically depressed, but there is no serious crime problem. At least not back in 2004. The lack of serious crime alone is a huge differentiator when compared with Detroit. Detroit is a freaking war zone.

Oh, and Windsor is much cleaner than Detroit is.

I suppose it's all relative. I've never been to either Detroit or Windsor, so I can't say from experience. But maybe to a number of Canadians, it seems similar. Perhaps what an American would consider to be a relatively low crime rate a Canadian might see as a much higher crime rate (since Canada does, in general, have less violent crime).

Perhaps, but the comparison was Detroit vs Windsor, so I assumed whoever told you that had been to both cities. I wasn't comparing Windsor to the rest of Canada or Detroit to the rest of America, but Windsor to Detroit.

I'm just listing some general associations.

And sure you can be proud.

I think what needs to happen is a reworking of the white pride movement. For one thing, they seem to have a recruitment problem because most people want to be more specific about their pride in their heritage: "Italian stallion" bumper stickers come to mind, or "Ask me about my lederhosen" badges. White is just too general, and it's none too snappy either. Clearly, those who support the legitimacy of white pride and see it as equivalent to black pride could offer their help in spreading the message. Because right now, the white pride movement is suffering from a PR problem.

A few of my suggestions:

Ditch the fatigues.

Get rid of that ugly flag.

Don't forget the sunscreen.

Do a little reading about what Aryan actually means and refers to.

To show goodwill, invite some of your black friends to join as affiliate members.

Tie-dye that Klan robe. Show your colorful side!

Tone down the snarling, conspiracy theories about the Jewish World Takeover, and anti-miscegenation rhetoric. It may alienate some would-be proud members.

Just some ideas...

When you pin them on what is it specifically they are proud of, they struggle for a definitive meaning. It's about as meaningful as saying you're proud to have blue eyes or freckles...as if you had anything to do with making that possible.

That is what is so irritating and disingenuous. I don't have a problem with someone who wants to be proud about anything to do with their cultural heritage but as soon as it smacks of racial elitism - which it always does with those who hide under the 'white pride' label - there is nothing at all wrong with calling it out for what it is.

Exactly. I can understand taking pride in heritage, whether it be Irish, German, French, but there is no definitive characteristics of being white beyond pigmentation of skin, and even then such characteristic seems to vary greatly, making the term 'white' impotent.

I think the problem is in defining "White" in strictly racial terms, given its scale and overarching dominance - and ignoring the diverse makeup of various immigrant cultures that make it up. There is no one clearly definable "white culture", and to many white americans I don't think its unreasonable to suggest that their German/Italian/Irish (etc etc) roots are more indicative of their cultural heritage and identity than simply their "whiteness".

"Black culture" is a little bit different - because its a subculture (key word) and a cultural construction that is i) new, and ii) broadly unique from the cultures of the countries they originated from - though it borrows from numerous sources.

Let's be honest, now - 'white' in America basically means those of European extraction. Sure, there are some people ofd other ethnicities who are fair skinned enough to 'pass' as white, but they are the exception. White more or less means European (in America).
