My husband should be here shortly God willing and I'd like to add him now to my insurance policies at work so that I don't have to worry about what if he gets sick when he gets here and all that jazz.

We have a self service here so I was filling it all out but it is asking for a social security number. I have heard on these boards that quite often that isn't needed but does anyone know now with the new law in Mass stating that you need coverage to file your taxes if it's a definite requirement? I'll call HR tomorrow but wondered if anyone from Mass has experienced this yet.

It is a requirement to have health insurance in Massachusetts

Also you are required in your taxes to have form 1099-HC to file or you will be penalized

so answer to your question yes it a good idea to have or you pay one way or another

Thanks but that wasn't my question. I know it's a requirement and I'm trying to figure out if we can get it without his SS number

Won't you have to get a SS number for AOS anyway?

We're applying for EAD when he gets here and then he can work and pay for AOS since it's so expensive. Until he gets the EAD he won't have a SS number and that can take months which is not good to not be insured for months.

As long as he has insurance on Dec 31st 2008 you will not be penilized for him not having it when he first gets here... the only people that can answer your question his your HR or health insurance company....

My Husband had me added to his Blue Cross Blue shield of MA before I had my SSN... so it can be done...

Thanks! I guess every company is different. I have to fill out a form and cannot sign him up until he arrives here and I have to submit the form along with a copy of our marriage license and a copy of his passport and we should be good to go. I wanted to have him insured as soon as he stepped off the plane but I guess it'll have to wait a week or two. Hope he doesn't get a bug on the way here! lol
