The 2 times reigning African champion Egypt will take on world's top ranked team Argentina. The South American team will be without their mercurial playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme (Boca Juniors), young 'Maradona' Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Carlos Tevez (Manchester United), Esteban Cambiasso (Inter Milan). Nevertheless, they are a formidable side with Maxi Rodriguez and Sergio Aguero (both from Atletico Madrid) will lead the attack. On the otherhand, Egypt has been playing very well recently who will try their best to beat Argentina. GolTV and GolTV Canada will telecast this match LIVE in USA and Canada respectively starting from 2 p.m. Eastern time. Below are some updates from the visiting team.

Egypt vs. Argentina: the buildup

Posted on Tuesday, 25 March 2008 by hastaelgolsiempre

The Argentine national side arrived in Cairo on Monday in preparation for Wednesday’s friendly against African champions Egypt minus Esteban Cambiasso, who has an injury in his left leg. The squad got straight to work in the gym of the their hotel, whilst manager Alfio Basile gave a press conference.

‘For Argentina this match is very important, as are all of them’ Basile told reporters. ‘We’re taking on the winners of the last two African Nations Cups. The sides on this continent have improved a lot in the last few years - they’re going through very good times.’ He then switched the tone from praising African football in general to tomorrow night’s opponents in particular.

‘I saw Egypt in the recent Nations Cup. They’re a solid team with good aerial presence and good width… They’re strong, they play well, and they’ll be very complicated rivals. As well as this they’re playing at home. We hope everything goes well.’ He went on to admit that this squad - lacking Juan Román Riquelme, Lionel Messi and now Cambiasso - is without several players who normally would be present.

Asked about Argentina’s hopes between now and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Basile replied, ‘Argentina haven’t won a World Cup since 1986 but we’re always one of the favourites. After Pelé retired, Brazil didn’t win a title for a long time. I can count on a very good squad, and I hope that in 2010 it happens for us.’

There were also soundbites from two of the players, Javier Zanetti and Sergio Agüero. Zanetti told journalists, ‘We respect every rival equally. Egypt, from what I know of them, are going to be a very difficult side. Competition’s good for us to keep improving and consolidate as a team. Personally, I feel pride every time I put on the Argentine shirt, I enjoy those moments.’

Agüero wasn’t quite so original. ‘Even though the match against Egypt is a friendly, we’re giving it a lot of importance. I think the same as ‘Pupi‘ [Zanetti], it’s going to be a complicated match.’

EGYPT PLAYED GOOD GAME BUT Argentina WON 2-0

IT WAS good game

Yes, it was a good game. I watched the whole game. Egypt did a good job closing Argentina in the midfield. In the 2nd half, Egypt enjoyed good ball possession. I can not believe what a chance Momammed Aboutreika missed! Egypt could have led by 1-0, had he converted that easy chance. And next moment, Argentina's 19-year old genius forward from Atletico Madrid, Sergio 'Kun' Aguero cleverly stayed onside, received the ball calmly, and rifled it into the roof of the net. This goal showed his class. This goal demoralized Egypt and Argentina found another goal from a looping header by defender Nicolas Burdisso of Inter Milan off a Maxi Rodriuez of Atletico Madrid free kick. This goal was the icing on the cake. Mohammed Zidan and Mohammed Aboutreika showed flashes of brilliance. But Egypt should be happy that they did not let the world top ranking team, Argentina dominate the whole game. Argentina missed their mercurial playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme of Boca Juniors and little wizard 'El Pulga' (The Flea) Lionel Messi of Barcelona. In my opinion, Lionel Messi is the best player in the world now. It would have been great to watch these two. Egypt has an easy group in the world cup qualifier and they have a great chance to go to South Africa World Cup in 2010. I remember Egypt played well in the 1990 world cup, they had some good players, like Abdel Gani, Abdou, Hasan Brothers (I think), and the brilliant goalkeeper (I forgot his name). Hope Egypt qualifies for 2010 world cup.

Oh Morocco beat Belgium by 4-1. Good win for them. I like Morocco and Egypt's passing game, they are great to watch. Morocco had some good players like Nourdine Neybet, Moustapha Hadji, Salahuddin Bashir, Yousef Hadji. I like to see Morocco in the 2010 world cup too.
