Hi there everyone. Well today I officially found out that my wife is pregnant! Yup, I'm going to be a dad!

As the doc checked my wife that she was 6 weeks old, he asked me if I was going to apply for the medical card. I didn't know what to answer but my insurance from worked covered today's visit.

My question is, if I apply for that medic aid does that count as a public charge or is this different from that?

If my memory serves me correctly....That would not be a Public Charge!!!!!

Look under the Poverty Guidelines

I think it's only emergency Medicaid that is not a Public Charge.

Congratulations Onofre!

If your health insurance from work covers your wife, I would stick with that. You have to meet certain financial guidelines to be eligible for medicaid anyway. But even if you qualified, I think that you'd be responsible to the government as her sponsor. However, once your child is born, and if you qualify financially, he/she would be eligible.

Why did your doctor even ask about medicaid if you guys already have insurance? Did the MD assume that you don't? I know that undocumented women are able to get medicaid during the length of their pregnancy in order to ensure that the babies are healthy, but once the baby is born the woman's medicaid benefit ends.

But that's clearly not your situation so I don't get the doctor's question.

I work for UPS so I have very good insurance, such as dental, vision, ect...I guess he assumed that she probably didn't have insurance but I do and it's very good. So I should just stick with that right?

But what about when the baby is born, does the link card counts as a public charge? Although I can afford it I guess some help wouldn't be too bad for us.

My 10-year old daughter and I came to the US on a K3 and K4 visa. Once I enrolled my daughter in one of the public schools here in LA she was automatically given an insurance by the government which covers everything including dental, vision and prescription drugs. It expires at the end of the month and I have to fill out and mail some forms so that my daughter can be covered by the insurance for a longer period of time. It says in the forms she is not considered a public charge if I fill out and submit the forms. They have mailed her medical insurance card now. I have used it recently to get her free reading glasses.

I also have read in the forms that pregnant women are qualified to get that kind of insurance and they are not considered a public charge. PM me if you want the toll free number to call and ask about it.

unless she is a permanent resident she won't be covered for Medicaid but rather emergency Medicaid...all it covers is delivery....the appts up till then aren't covered....but the baby will be covered after delivery for a year.....so don't lose your insurance!

I'm going through this right now....we're paying all the dr costs out of pocket....its very expensive!

An ultrasound alone is $300....it sucks not to have insurance!

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about it :)

I just do some research on the Medic Aid issue for green card holder. I found out that Medic aid and Medicare DOES NOT consider "public charge" for green card holder as long as they don't use Medicaid and Medicare for long-term healthcare. Therefore, the green card holder CAN apply for Medic Aid and Medicare if they are eligible for. Here is the link for USCIS website http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/public_cqa.pdf . Read question # 7. It will answer all of your questions. Hope that help.

The I-864P lists the types of public aid you are required to re-imburse the government for.
