ooo, I LOVE halloumi :)

and grilled halloumi is a gift from the gods...

Houston is fun and there is serious shopping to be done.

the irony, given I started this thread, is that I'm not much of a shopper at all

I'll get a few things for the house once I get there (and my boxes arrive), but otherwise I can go for months and not buy anything... for me it's usually a means to an end, rather than an end in itself ;)

sometimes I DO like looking, however... and I want to be able to know where to look, rather than not knowing where to start ;)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

I'm going to Houston; fourth largest US city ;)

and sometimes I just like to have some knowledge, regardless of how immediately practical it's going to be to me... I've done a major international move before, so I know at least some of what's going to seem weird to me, and I just want to feel a little less ignorant

plus, I knew hearing all the different opinions would be fun :)

Ah. Houston. Lucky you then. You'll have lots of shopping options. We live in the fourth largest city in our state (albeit a small state) and we don't have many of the listed US shops near us.

I can tell you that if you find TJMaxx over here, it's nearly identical to TKMaxx. I've even seen some of the same housewares on shelves in shops on both continents. And I always get Christmas crackers there each year.

My husband has found his search for things to be more 'item specific' rather than 'shop specific'. He's always foraging for US products (usually food) that 'work' for him. He's fond of Cabot cheeses that we get at WalMart and Sams Club. Giant Eagle Stores sometimes have a 'european' aisle and he gets Heinz beans and HP Sauce there. And believe it or not, BigLots has a rather nice selection of international foods, although those products are usually 'one-offs' so we buy all we can find when we run across something. As far as bread goes - my husband never has complained of US bread, but we also usually buy our bread from the deli section of the grocer and not the big 'bread aisle'.

grilled halloumi is the food of the gods

I seem to have a hard time finding that near me - none of the regular supermarkets stock it.

I bought some last week in Bristol - it was 2 quid. :dancing: I've found it here (WHole Foods?) but for like $7.
