 It bugs me too...

I'm just hoping that one day people stop pronouncing my name as Tarsha

I am sure I will learn to cope with it though!!!

That happens to me all the time too. Everyone wants to know if it's pronounced with a hard or soft 'g' yet I've never met a Gillian who pronounces with a hard 'g'. I guess they must be out there though.

I'm a soft 'g' by the way.

Gillian

Oh, it just drives me BATTY!

NO no no, I'm talking about people who think they're name is Ma-HONE-ey as opposed to MAH-huney (Mahoney) or Gall-ag-er as opposed to Gall-a-her (Gallagher) they're the best examples I can think of. Basically it's all Ellis Island's fault. Everyone got re-named there.

Ohhhh.

I've met a hard-G Gillian... I don't like it much, I have to say

Yes, us Gillians are soft.:blink:

My co-workers still mispronounce my (Italian) first name. I hate it. Thank god no one has to say my last name - that is always butchered.

Okay, spill Dev! What's your first name?!!

Poiteen -- it IS my middle name!

I was going to take a picture of the flagpole on our town green for you -- right underneath the American flag flies the Irish one. #######? I can *just* about handle that in March (actually, I can't at all, just trying to go along with the custom of the country) but today's date is April 16th. April 16th, people!

I thought you were saying Poiteen is your middle name. And the Irish flag on your town green is just weird. Are they twinned with a town in Ireland or something?

I'm just hoping that one day people stop pronouncing my name as Tarsha

How do you get Tarsha out of Tasha?

Am I one of those makey-uppey Irish-American people who pronounce their own names wrong? It's not my fault my parents named me after a Blood, Sweat & Tears song! :crying:

Meagan?

Tash wins the prize! And okay, it's a makey-uppey Welsh name -- I was having a senior moment yesterday afternoon.

Poiteen - there's also the phonetically spelled irish names over here like Neve and Shavon. If I was going to give my child an Irish name, I would want the exotic spelling!

Like Siobhan :D

Hahah I figured out Niamh, but I actually had No idea what name you were talking about until Jeraly piped up

My OH likes to say Sigh-O-ban just to annoy me, and he pronounces Taoiseach (the Irish PM) Tao-si-ach cos he says that way it sounds like an eastern martial art  .
