i work for ssa.. it typically takes 2 weeks for the ssn to be issued.. i know you want your card first but if your name is gonna be changed due to marriage, you are gonna have to change it again.. for proofs we need 2 documents.. for an original card( you have never been assigned a number), we need 2 proofs.. form I-94, passport..... you can then use your marriage certificate and passport to change your name to apply for your name change..

2 weeks under normal conditions, but for people on a visa there is no telling how long it's going to take. For the name change and to be issued a card you need the I-94 too and if the marriage certificate has the person's age or date of birth, that and the I-94 is all that's needed. I think you need to brush up on your POMS. LOL

here is the link for the ss-5(application for a social security card)..http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf...also check out our website at www.ssa.gov :star:

I assume you aren't an SR at a field office or you would know that SS-5s aren't used for walk-ins when the applicant is there.

RM 00202.001 Form SS-5 (Application for A Social Security Card) - Overview:

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202001

3. Systems-Generated Application

FO employees use the NY SS-5 Assistant Release 2 in conjunction with MES to input and process an application for an SSN card. The systems-generated application will collect and display the same information that is collected on the Form SS-5. When the applicant remains in the office throughout the interview and keying of this data, the FO employee must print the systems-generated application for the applicant's review and signature, and the FO employee(s) certification(s).

-- request the applicant to verify all data (e.g., spelling of name, date of birth, sex code, and mailing address) on the systems-generated application;

-- request the applicant to sign the systems-generated application (even if the applicant had brought in a completed paper or Internet Form SS-5);

--keep the signed systems-generated application in the holding file for later shipment to the SSA Records Center; and

-- destroy (i.e., by shredding) any other versions of the form that may have been completed once the systems-generated application has been signed.

Funny because I downloaded and used that form when I applied for my SS number for the first time. I brought it with me at the SSA office and handed-in my filled out form and the personnel said "Oh, great... it will make things easier for both of us." She then checked everything and then made me sign on the system-generated application and told me that the card should be mailed within 2 weeks. I got it in less than a week. :thumbs:

They probably copied everything off your SS-5, so they didn't have to ask you all the questions, but once you signed the computer generated application, the SS-5 went in the destroy bin and the computer generated application is what is sent out to be microfilmed as your permanent record.

This is what I did:

I arrived in the US, went to the SSA the next day, applied for the SSN in my married name so it would match the visa and all that.

We got married two days later, I went back there with the marriage certificate to proof my namechange and got the card with my married name.

No problems at all.

you mean you applied with your maiden name?

thanks for the answer

Oneder do you know if it's a problem if I only apply after the wedding with my new name?

They shouldn't have problems to retrieve me in the computer because I would provide documents with my maiden name...

Thanks :)

your maiden name doesn't change until after you get married... when you get married ssa doesn't have that information until you go in and change it with your marriage certificate... i mean you can go to ssa before or after you get married.. either way you will eventually have to change your name.. i'm gonna wait until after we are married... since they already have my maiden name in the computer, i can just change it after we get married with the marriage certificate.. sorry for the late response, i've been kinda busy... you can send me a message if you have more questions.. i hope i am attaching this to the right thread.. thanks.. oneder

either way you will eventually have to change your name.. i'm gonna wait until after we are married... since they already have my maiden name in the computer, i can just change it after we get married with the marriage certificate...

There is nothing that requires a person to change their name after getting married as long as they work and file taxes under the maiden name.

You can change your name with just the marriage certificate, since you are a United States citizen, as long as it has some info that can be compared to the Numident, e.g. age, date of birth. Otherwise, you will need more documentation.

Take a look at EM-06064 and EM-07045.

I have another question though. When I enter the US under K1 visa, we'd like to get married asap, just a few days after, so that we can start applying for AOS. Should we get my SSN before getting married or it doesn't matter if it is right after under my new name?? I read that it is ilportant to apply for SSN first thing, but if we wnat to get married a few days after my arrival, SSA won't probably have the info they need to give me a SSN...

I think whether you get your SSN before you get married or not is up to you and how quickly the offices in your state can process things. My husband and I decided it would be better if we applied after we were married so he could apply under his new name and I could change the name on my card (I am the USC but he also changed his name). We got married about 2 weeks after we arrived then waited for our certified marriage certificate in the mail which only took about 4 days! In MN if you are applying for your SSN for the first time you have to apply in person so we both went down to the local office. We did have to wait 2 hours before they called our number but it was a small price to pay and we are use to it after all :) We didn't have any trouble applying with the married name. We just printed the SSN application forms off the internet, brought the marriage certificate (to show proof of name change) and his passport with unexpired I-94 to the SS office. I think we also brought his birth certificate but I don't think we needed it.

It took about two weeks before the number came in the mail. While waiting for the SSN he was able to apply for his state ID without the number.

Good luck in making your decision and I hope for speedy processing of everything!

The St. Paul office of SSA understands the K-1... which is not something you can say for all SSA offices....

YMMV

MN must allow a man to change his name based on marriage, since the name change must be allowed under state law through marriage to use the marriage certificate and I don't believe every state allows a man to change his name after getting married.

I would be interested to know what states wouldn't allow a spouse to change their name after marriage because of gender. It seems a little discriminatory and I wouldn't think that a male changing their name after marriage wasn't that odd.

MN is pretty progressive, we could have combined our names and made up a new last name if we wanted.
