Can you apply for SSN right after your arrival at POE

Hello,

I don't know how many questions I have posted today.. But here is another one!

I think I will try to go through JFK as it is the only POE to give the EAD stamp. I just want to work asap after my arrival.

Apparently, EAD isn't valid unless you get a SSN.

Once I am in the US, can I apply for SSN right after my arrival, or is there a period under which it is not possible to apply? Thanks.

Where do you apply for SSN? How long does it take? I guess it depends on where you apply...

Let me know please!

Thank you!!!!

Bye

They say to wait 15 days, so the info can get into the system. We applied at the local office and it took about 10 days to get the SS card....

I applied for SSN 10 days after my arrival here. The SSA told me that it was good that DHS has my arrival recorded in their system already. Otherwise, they won't assign a number. Some say 2 weeks might be enough time to apply for SSN and it takes at least 1-2 weeks for the card to arrive in the mail.

You can apply two minutes after arrival if you so desire... regardless of when you apply, the SSA will need to run a verification check and that can take upwards of two weeks from date of arrival, because it can take that long for the DHS system to update the SAVE system that SSA uses.

YMMV

Verification can take WAY longer than two weeks, especially if a G-845 needs to be sent.

The work stamp or EAD card doesn't need an SSN to be valid, just hard to find someone that will hire/pay you without you having an SSN.

The work stamp is only good for the 90 days the K-1 status is valid, si if you don't have the 1 year EAD card at that time you will need to stop working until you have the EAD card or I-551.

You can obtain the address and directions to Social Security offices from the Social Security Office Locator, which is available on the Internet at:

http://www.ssa.gov/locator

Note: People who live or receive mail in the Brooklyn, NY, Queens, NY, Phoenix, AZ, Orlando, FL or Las Vegas, NV area MUST apply in person at one of the Social Security Card Centers, regardless of age.

Card Center Information:

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cf...hp?p_faqid=1412

The amount of time to be assigned an SSN depends on the time it takes to verify your status. If you are lucky they can do it while you are in the office and you should have your SSN card within a couple weeks, but normally can go back to the office withi a day or two to obtain the number if you don't feel like waiting for the card.

If you are not lucky and a Form G-845 needs to be sent you could be waiting weeks or months and with K-1 status it will probably kill your chance of being assigned an SSN based on the K-1 status.

That's why you can't just say it's 2 weeks. Saw a case today that the person applied in December 2007 and the electronic verification came back verifing status the next day and no one in the SSA office did anything, so the person has been waiting 3 months for an SSN that should have been assigned back in December.

What I said is that the verification process could take upwards of two weeks nothing about how long it would take the card to be issued. In you example, the verification came back within two weeks (which is what I said was typical), and then subsequently hit a "failure point" after the verification came back.

YMMV

Hello!

Thanks for your help.

I have another question though. When I enter the US under K1 visa, we'd like to get married asap, just a few days after, so that we can start applying for AOS. Should we get my SSN before getting married or it doesn't matter if it is right after under my new name?? I read that it is ilportant to apply for SSN first thing, but if we wnat to get married a few days after my arrival, SSA won't probably have the info they need to give me a SSN...

What would be best?

Thanks!!!!!

Yes I have the same question as Faustine...

Is it a problem if I apply for a SSN after we get married?

Because we don't want to wait to get married to shorten all the AOS process as much as possible

There should not be a problem.... however, many have reported a problem. The reasons have been but not limited to the SSA staff is unfamiliar with the K-1, the need to perform a status verification which would be in a name different than what the USCIS has, etc....

YMMV

i work for ssa.. it typically takes 2 weeks for the ssn to be issued.. i know you want your card first but if your name is gonna be changed due to marriage, you are gonna have to change it again.. for proofs we need 2 documents.. for an original card( you have never been assigned a number), we need 2 proofs.. form I-94, passport..... you can then use your marriage certificate and passport to change your name to apply for your name change.. our county courthouse told me we could use our passports to obtain the marriage license, since he wouldn't have the ssn until later.. see what your ...courthouse will let you use to get married.. i wanna marry asap.. here is the link for the ss-5(application for a social security card)..http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf...also check out our website at www.ssa.gov :star:

They shouldn't have problems to retrieve me in the computer because I would provide documents with my maiden name...

This is what I did:

I arrived in the US, went to the SSA the next day, applied for the SSN in my married name so it would match the visa and all that.

We got married two days later, I went back there with the marriage certificate to proof my namechange and got the card with my married name.

No problems at all.
