On the other hand I don't know how anyone would risk their sight to save a few $$$$.

I agree. I would never ever go to Colombia for laser surgery even if it was free.....

in fact, if it was free, I'd definitely not go!

What if something goes wrong? What if you need a follow-up?

Believe it or not most doctors from South America went to medicla school and received their training here in the USA.

May 7,2007-USCIS received I-129f

March 27,2009-Manuel returned to the consulate for another interrogation(because they forgot about December's interview),and they were really rude !

When I was in...junior high, I think, one of my teachers was telling me about a trip he'd taken with a bunch of kids to Russia once. This would have been in the 90s so it wasn't like Cold War era or anything.

Some kid hurt himself and needed stitches for something, so they went to the hospital and the docs were trying to give him the local anesthetics so it wouldn't hurt, but apparently supplies were still restricted there (...? I don't know what area it was) and the doctors had to reuse shots and syringes. Which, they test the blood of the people they've used it on, make sure there's nothing contagious, obviously  AND they sterilize the heck out of the thing. To me in pain I wouldn't think it's a big deal I don't think, I would have been 'yeh whatever go to it'.

But this teacher was complaining tons about it and I think his point was 'ain't America great' or something, made the kid bleed and wait while he went all around the city or town looking for a fresh new needle to buy in a store. Could only find diabetic supply tiny ones, brought them back, doctors had to give the guy like dozens of tiny shots of anesthetic before they could start sewing him up.

Seems unnecessary to me. I think people are too paranoid and probably a lot of worst-case scenarios or horror stories we would hear about foreign countries' medical practices would be urban legends. And probably what, really...at least 90 out of 100 cases it'd be perfectly fine to share a needle, and that's just going on risk, not account for the fact that they test AND sterilize.

Hey HERE'S a fun and sensitive subject that should make everyone fight! :o:D

Does anybody's health insurance cover abortions? Would socialized health insurance cover them?

Seeing as how I am not a woman and that I have never known anyone who has required an abortion, I couldn't answer from personal experience. However, I would have to assume that health insurance would cover abortions depending on the circumstances involved at the time.

I'd say most health insurance companies would see a huge difference between a woman deciding to get an abortion because she didn't use any form of birth control and a woman whose life is threatened by giving birth to a child. One is voluntary and would be considered "unnecessary" whereas the other would essentially be involuntary and be absolutely necessary (unless allowing the woman to die is a reasonable option).

Health insurance companies refuse to cover procedures that they consider "unnecessary" such as rhinoplasty or liposuction; even other operations, which could be needed in some cases, but not in others, might be deemed "unnecessary" if the health of the patient isn't at stake. If a woman wants a hysterectomy and there's nothing wrong with physiologically, it'd be highly unlikely that any health insurance provider would opt to cover that. If she had cancer in that area or some other issue that required the removal, then the health insurance company would probably step in.

As for socialized medicine, I don't know. I do know that in Canada (at least some provinces, anyway), the socialized healthcare system -- which is run provincially -- will rarely cover non-essential procedures. So in Canada's case, it's not very different from the United States. I culdn't speak for other countries, however.

Germany's system does if you suffer from extreme economic hardship. You still have to pay something, but it is not near what the normal cost is.

I don't know about Colombia, but medical care, including cosmetic and corrective surgery, in Thailand is very cheap and very good. I wouldn't have anything done here in China, though. I did consider giving birth at the Western hospital in Beijing, but my husband insisted that I go to the USA.
