Hello Everyone,

Hope someone out there can help me. I have a SSN, but not a card anymore. (I got a SSN while in a J1 visa). Do I need an actual card to get married, or the number alone will do? I know I need to get my card eventually, but I was wondering if I can get married before that. And when I get an replacement card, will the number change?

Thanks!

Call the register of deeds to ask what documents you will need to obtain the marriage license. They are the only one who can tell you for sure as the rules change by county and states. Many people get married without even having a SSN so you should be fine though, but it can't hurt to check.

And no the number will not change, the SSN is attributed for life.

Hello Marcella,

No you don't need your SSN number to get married. I got married before I applied for my SSN. All you need is your passport and your I-94. They will make copies of it. And about your SSN, if you know your number, you can apply for a replacement card. Go to Social Security

All I needed to apply for my SSN was my passport, my marriage certificate (the certified copy they gave us on the wedding day. the original will come in your mail in a few weeks) and my valid I-94.

Boa sorte!

They will not ask to see the social security card, just fill out the number.

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.
