Foreign language teaching

My USC fiancé filed for K-1 at VSC in early February, which means my move to the US is still some months away. However, while I wait here, I'd be grateful for advice from the people who have already gone the same way.

I am a native speaker of Italian, and have had extensive experience as a language teacher, both in Italy and abroad. I taught English in high school in Italy for about 10 years, then spent another 5 and a half years teaching Italian at university level in Finland. Besides Italian and English, I also speak French, Finnish and German, and can understand Spanish rather well (can also sort of speak it, though I've never had any formal instruction).

My question is, would I have any chances of finding a job as a foreign language teacher for adults? I'm not interested in teaching in school, but I love teaching older, motivated people, and my experience in Finland was great. My fiancé told me the demand for foreign language education is on the rise in the US, and in the area where he lives (DC Metro area) there are a large number of language schools. Luckily, I won't have to start looking for a job immediately, since my fiancé makes enough to provide for both of us, and I will also have some income from Italy. Therefore, I may also consider working part-time, and at my own pace. However, language teaching (especially my own) is something I find very rewarding and enjoyable, and I would really give it a shot again once I move to the US.

It depends where you live.

We live in Orlando and I teach at Berlitz, where most of the students are there to learn English. There is a need for an Italian teacher once and awhile. However the need for teachers there, it is my second job and cannot really be treated as a sole job since there are no benefits, your job depends on if there are students or not, and you are "self employed". I think your best bet would be to see if there are language schools in your area...and depending on your educational background you may find a job as a HS foreign language teacher. I wonder if you can look into a university or even community colleges. I know there isn't much demand for Italian classes here in Denver but I've seen it taught on a part-time bases at the community college close to our house.
