Pat Buchanan: Black Americans should be grateful we brought them over on slave ships!

maybe you should read up on the concept of culture, cultural environment as well as cultural differences.

Maybe you should have a look at the definition of servitude before speaking.

Why?

How will reading up on dictionary definitions of common words, and sociological terminology make them see your black and white (no pun intended) point of view?

You guys just got dicked badly and are stereotypical trying to discredit the source.

I wait I forgot only black Americans where slaves. Morons..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

What a great read. Care to comment PH, maviwaro, Crikey!, Big Agnes!?? Do you need me to highlight the key points? Hint has the word white and slave in the sentence.

Surely a question of degrees. More blacks than whites were slaves. Moreover, more blacks were slaves over a longer period of time than whites (I'm talking generationally here).

What kind of subjects did your social science professors discuss?

I don't remember to be honest but it certainly wasn't about african slaves. Why would we when hundreds of other different ethnicities were also a victim of slavery. America was not the first nation and certainly not the last to have slaves.

Come to think of it, we did actually study the white slaves in America who where in servitude. aka slavery!!

That's quite an interesting selective curriculum. U.S. black history wasn't on your educational radar, but this supposed white U.S. slavery was? What other curricular offerings were there?

The definition of servitude is a slavery. Or is the oxford dictionary wrong. I also checked the North American version and it has the same definition.

I would actually be quite surprised to see other countries studying slavery in the United States at any great length. If you think about it, the entire thing would mean very little to them. Sure, other countries and societies have had slavery before (most have, in fact), but why would people who have nothing to do with the culture in the U.S. care at all about what happened here over two centuries ago or more? It doesn't affect them one way or the other, unless they move here. Assuming, however, that foreigners stay in their own countries, the history of slavery in America and that of African Americans is of little use to them, aside from a brief historical footnote or comparison with other slave cultures in the past.

Oh and in regards to what someone said earlier about how "the more intelligent people are generally wealthier," I'd have to disagree. It probably should be that way, but if that were true, how do you explain the differences in earning power between university professors (who need a PhD in their field) and sports stars or celebrities? I'm sure some actors/actresses and sports players are quite smart, but the majority of them are most likely somewhere around "average" intelligence; perhaps even lower in some areas.

How much someone earns (and subsequently, their wealth) is usually based on what we, as a culture, value and how many people can do it. Since we tend to see entertainment being incredibly important, those within that field who've become very successful earn millions upon millions of dollars. It's also very difficult to become an actor or actress with any degree of stardom and it's even worse for sports hopefuls, as making it into the professional leagues is damn near impossible for most.

Other careers, which are probably far more necessary to the operation of our society, generally earn less, but many more people can perform those tasks as well. So while it make take a lot of education to get a PhD and become a professor (to use my example from earlier), there are far more professors teaching at universities than there are professional atheletes. Likewise, there's a greater chance someone could accomplish the training and education required to gain their PhD, whereas getting into the NFL or NBA is something only a very select few are able to see happen.

My favorite excerpt: "Free Black property owners strutted the streets of northern and southern American cities..."

Strutted! How dare they?!!

Indeed. And here was I thinking that "strutting" was the purview of Jewish moneylenders and Greek prostitutes ;)

So what?

I mean... what point are you trying to make?

You said that your Black South African friend thought SA was a much better place to live years ago. Years ago they had segregation and Apartheid. Only a cynical man could call that a "nice environment" to live in.

In other news some Iraqis have expressed the opinion that their lot was better under Saddam Hussein. It may have been - but when you lived under a $hitty regime to begin with...

And indentured servitude had a way out for the servant. At least that was the way my Republican US History teacher explained it back in the day. Something to do with fulfillment of a contract. Whereas African slaves... well... lets say they had an offer they couldn't refuse. Or was there some magical clause that allowed them to simply finish their ' contracts ' ??? LOL. Perhaps it was also written in invisible ink, much the same as the invisible type all over this thread.

Long after Blacks were free throughout the British Empire, the British House of Lords refused to abolish chimney-sweeping by White children under the age of ten. The Lords contended that to do so would interfere with "property rights." The lives of the White children were not worth a farthing and were considered no subject for humanitarian concern.

And to this day, little white children under the age of ten are taunted by the older children and called such names as "Chimney brush" and "Q-tip", and are told to jump on a plane back to London if they don't like it.

Hey if Qantas is giving away free miles for the trip... then maybe the numbers of visible African Americans will be greater for those that read invisible type.

Back to my indentured service.

You got rolled badly. I am sure if I look deeper into the past about white slavery you will end up being rolled even further.

What did you say to me again "How easy it is to be ignorant of history... or just ignore it. Either way, its not an excuse for judging"
