Can anybody give me a general idea as to how long we will need to wait to get my wife's social security number from the time we go into the SSA office and apply? :clock:

Thi and I went the Van Nuys,Ca SSA office on March 14,2008. The clerk who processed her application was very nice. We brought her Vietnamese passport, I-94 and birth certificate. If you bring a birth certificate in a language other than English, you might want to have it translated. Forunately for us, there is a Vietnamese employee at the Van Nuys, Ca office. The clerk took her birth certificate and had the Vietnamese employee tell him what it said. He told us we could call in 3 business days and get the number if necessary. Otherwise he said we should receive her SS card in 10 to 14 days.

So if I enter the US with a K-3 visa, I can the next day apply for a SS number, just with my passport, K-3 Visa/I-94? And why do they need also a birth certificate? Does it have to be a certified translation or just "any translation" like for the I-130/ I-129F processes?

Do I need have filed adjustment of status paperwork to apply for the SS #? Do I need to wait for a receipt from AOS? So the SS # comes before the work permit?

From what I see in your timeline, you guys got your SS very fast!

Can anybody give me a general idea as to how long we will need to wait to get my wife's social security number from the time we go into the SSA office and apply? :clock:

It all depends on how long it takes SSA to verify her status. They do an initial electronic verification while you are in the office; if that verifies they clear the application and you should have your card within 2 weeks, but can go back to the office within a day or two to find out the number if you don't want to wait for the card.

If the initial electronic verification doesn't verify they submit a secondary electronic verification, if that verifies they clear the application etc., and the secondary requests normally come back within a week, but SSA has to wait approximately a month before following up.

Sometimes, the response for the secondary electronic verification is that DHS wants to see a copy of the immigration document (s) and they are sent along with Form G-845. Some are processed locally, but most go to a DHS office in either California or Virginia. If a G-845 is sent all bets are off on how long it's going to take. SSA is supposed to send a 2nd G-845 request if the 1st doesn't come back with a month and then they wait another month for that one to come back. If that one doesn’t come back they are to contact the SSA Regional office.

So bottom line is you can't compare your application processing time against the application of anyone else. You just have to go back to the SSA office to be sure that they did what they are supposed to do and when they were supposed to do it.

If you entered on a K-3 you need either an EAD card or wait to the AOS is approved and you have an I-551 stamp or card.

When requesting an SSN card, the documents presented, as evidence must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. SSA cannot accept uncertified or notarized photocopies as evidence.

“If the applicant has no immediate need for the SSN and the translation can be done promptly or the foreign language document is the only evidence available; have the document translated by an authorized translator and use the document as evidence.â€

“If the applicant has a pressing need for an SSN, and evidence other than the foreign language document is available; request other evidence and process the application without the foreign language document.â€

SSA translators comprise two groups:

-- Field office and Payment Center employees who volunteer their

services as translators

-- Central Translation Section translators who hold actual translator

positions.

We went to the SSA office on monday, and they told us it would take 10 days for the card to be delivered, but she said we can go for the SS number the next morning. We went to the SSA office the next morning 11am and they gave us a printed sheet with her SS number. Hope this helps.

Juan.
