Hi again... I am sorry, but today my husband and me were woundering about something.... Before we married I got my SSN with my maiden name + with phrase that it is not for work.... I tried to change my last name on it after we married, but people there told me that I need to bring a green card so they can change my last name on SSN... anyway... when I will recieve EAD with my new last name can I go with it and try to change my SSN? and second question can I work having my EAD even if it's says "not for work porpouse" on my SSN??? If they tell me that I can't change SSN till I have my GC + issue of new SSN takes 2 months here in Florida + everywhere here in Florida people ask the copy of SSN... so how they gonna hire me with my EAD if my SSN says "not for porpouse to work" + different last name in SSN (as to change it they ask GC)????

First and foremost, have your sh#!t together when you go to the SS office, alot of them dont know what their talking about. You need to go to your local Social Security Administration, bring your passport, I-485 receipt and EAD card, and apply for a replacement SSN Card (the number will remain the same).

If you plan to start working right away, then as soon as you get your EAD, go to the SSA office and apply for the condition to be changed to "valid for work with DHS authorization" (which in this case would be your EAD).

But, once you get your Green Card, you have to go back and get that message changed again... for it to say nothing... so unless you plan on working right away, wait until you get your GC.

With that, you will also be able to apply for a Drivers' license.Once you have your SSN card, you got to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or Department of Public Safety (DPH) and apply for a Driver's License.

You can not apply for the DL without proof of legal status in the USA (such as EAD or GC, or I-94 allowing you to stay longer than 183 Days), your passport, and a SSN.

Oh thank you... I already got my Driving license with K-1 visa, but I need to go there this week or next and change it for new last name as they told me to come when I will have papers from USCIS with my new last name on it saying that they started AOS process... as for SSN... I agree... I need to choose the best option... I guess i will try to change it with EAD card and after with green card again.... oh well what can I do....

The Social Security Administration does not delete, destroy, rescind, inactivate or cancel Social Security numbers once they are assigned. If you have been assigned an SSN it will remain your number throughout your lifetime and SSN cards do not expire.

An SSN card having the legend, “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION,” only means that you cannot use the SSN card as proof of authorization to work in the United States. It does not otherwise affect the validity of the card or number.

You will need to provide an employment authorization document, e.g. I-766, when applying for employment. Employers must complete U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) Form I-9, “Employment Eligibility Verification,” for each individual hired.

When i asked - what I need to tell my future employer when they see that my SSN has maiden name and EAD has married name- they told me this is my own problem and I need try to explain them this SS Office rule and if nobody hires me because of that I need to wait till my GC arrives to find a job... So what is the point to have EAD if it doesn't have any power???

Is your EAD card in your married name? If it is that's BS. BTW which SSA office was this?

Your EAD card is your authorization to work and that satifies the I-9 requirement, just will need to work under the name on your current SSN card until you can get it changed.

Your employer should record the name and SSN shown on the SSN card in their business' personnel and payroll records that are used to prepare W-2 reports.

OMG!!!! Thank you so much for such a useful link!!! No I didn't recieve an EAD card yet, but I applied using my new name (married)... So as soon as I recieve it I will go with my husband (USC) so we can show this paper together.. because always when i go to these places by myself they kick me out, and when my husband comes they don't tell anything one nice lady in DMV adviced us that he always should go with me till I have my US passport, because some people are mean and they know that many immigrants don't know their rights that's why they do and say whatever they want

really want to change my last name in passport , but my ex-communist soviet country (Kazakh Embasssy in DC) doesn't want to change till I send a copy of Green Card!!! Oh well.. it is another story...
