"President Bush says he has no doubts about launching the unpopular war in Iraq despite the "high cost in lives and treasure," arguing that retreat now would embolden Iran and provide al-Qaida with money for weapons of mass destruction to attack the United States."

I really hope in 10 months we get new speech writers, too.

Al-Qaida wasnt opperating in Iraq until we got there. So i guess he succeeded in making problems worse, in the hopes of I suppose, keeping Republicans in power.

I don't think Bush has much of anything useful to say, certainly not on this issue. Its not like he's going to suddenly admit that it was a half-baked $hitty idea.

Bush is irrelevant these days anyway - and its not likely that he'll be getting a lot of press during and in the run-up to the election season.

Another Nixon. But, in the history book George Bush will be praised.

Yeah - like Nixon is "praised".

All that man has for a historical legacy is a bunch of yellowed newspaper clippings and a name plaque on the moon.

Who knows, the public has mostly forgot about Reagan's blemishes.

Not surprising.

There are people in the UK who laud Margaret Thatcher despite the fact that her premiership was categorised by a war, the gutting of the manufacturing industry and poll tax riots. The 80's really weren't all that great.

The right-leaning public, perhaps, but that's largely the result of the embarrassing Republican presidents since. Also, death helps.

True - out of angst at all the $hit stuff that was going on.

Inspiration comes out of adversity and all that ;)

The right-leaning public, perhaps, but that's largely the result of the embarrassing Republican presidents since. Also, death helps.

No doubt. Aren't there Iraqis who have said that compared to how things are now they preferred Saddam's rule because at least they didn't have to worry about no running water and intermittent electricity.

Agreed, GWB will be praised for his confrontation of radical Islam, and its defeat. He probably will be remembered more so for his ability to stave off the Dem's consistent and irrational desire to surrender to the radicals.

Nixon has his China foreign policy successes........

I'm sure there are some people who will think that - but I think its a tad premature and dare I say it "optimistic" to lay claim to GWB's historical legacy as a radical success when he remains controversial not only among democrats but many in his own party are disillusioned with him.

It also shouldn't be underestimated how unpopular GWB is outside of the US.

IMO his legacy (like that of most previous presidents) will be defined largely by the state that the country was in when he left it. The downturn in the economy might not be attributable to him - but an expensive war with no clear end in sight unquestionably is?

As I say - I don't envy whoever gets to inherit this mess.

I think "it's defeat" is stretching it there.

But I do agree there will be some good things he will be remembered for even if people don't want to accept it. Let's not forget he inherited from Clinton the mess that caused 9/11. It was planned before Bush was President. He will be remembered for being the Pres when 9/11 happened and ppl were in favor of him after that and when he bombed Afghanistan and toppled the Taliban. I do wish more focus was put on that war of course, so that it won't fall back into the Taliban's hands. If he is remembered as a liar, then Clinton should be too.
