If you no longer maintain residence in the US, and are perceived as moving outside of the country, you can loose it pretty much right away.

But otherwise, you will need a re-entry permit after 1 year, and you will loose status after 2 years.

I have a few friends (USCs) married to Chinese women, living and working in China. Their wives have permanent residence visas for the US. One has been married for 9 years and another for 7 years. They have never lived in the US. They applied for something called a "white passport." I'm not sure it exists any longer and I don't know what the official name for the document is. I remember them talking after 9-11 about how the policies have changed and they were told they could be denied entry at the port of entry. They never have been.

I never applied for my husband's visa because we weren't planning to live in the US and I had heard from my friends that getting the white passport was difficult.

I know if you work for a US entity abroad, your years abroad with that entity are counted the same as living in the US.

White passport is a re-entry permit.
