Is my absolute enemy the automobile?

But Kean is right next to Union station.

I though the main campus is a little further down isn't it? There's some stuff over the road from the lights at (I think) Green street - where the station road is - but it looked industrial. I never paid much attention to it.

I have friends who commute to Kean by train. They walk across Green to go to class.

Maybe the campus is large enough for a lot of it to be much further. I don't know.

Looks like the liberal democrats are at it again...More social engineering to change your behavior, because of course they know what's best for all of us!

You'll be hard pressed to find many in this state who will oppose mass transit... the keys are walkability, affordability and safety. If you can deliver on those three, it will work here.

I dislike the demagoguing on the automobile though.

It sounds like it does there is a gated campus further down towards the intersection with North Avenue that has the Keane sign on it.

NJ transit works pretty well going into and out of NYC - but you quickly find that it isn't really that well integrated if there's somewhere specific you want to go in Jersey. Some of the fares are heinously expensive too - $7 surcharge I think to get off at Newark Airport, regardless of where you get on; and $15-$20 to get from Secaucus out to Parsippany or somewhere like that.

Los Angeles is taking the best approach to bringing in mass transit - its still a ways off from completion but they've already got a pretty good working monorail system serving the city from Pasadena to Long Beach. Cheap too - like the NY subway its one flat rate for a single trip anywhere on the line. As opposed to London where they charge you according to how far you go.

I was a much happier person when I didn't have a car.

But 'absolute enemy'? I thought that was the Islamofascists :jest:

;):P

A figure of speech, sometimes termed a rhetoric, or locution, is a word or phrase that departs from straightforward, literal language. Figures of speech are often used and crafted for emphasis, freshness of expression, or clarity. However, clarity may also suffer from their use. Note that all theories of meaning necessarily have a concept of "literal language" (see literal and figurative language). Under theories that do not, figure of speech is not an entirely coherent concept.

As an example of the figurative use of a word, consider the sentence, I am going to crown you. It may mean:

* I am going to place a literal crown on your head.

* I am going to symbolically exalt you to the place of kingship.

* I am going to put a second checker piece on top of your checker piece to signify that it has become a king (as in the game of checkers).

* I am going to punch you in the head with my clenched fist.

Ok the Simpsons 'monorail' episode just popped into my head.

Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken! Monorail! Monorail! Monorail!

I agree on NJ Transit. The good news is that there are projects underway to start fixing the deficiency. For example, the West Trenton Line will connect Bridgewater with Trenton. There's a light-rail being set up to service Bergen county. There will be dedicated bus rapid transit on Route 78 servicing Somerset and Hunterdon counties. And they're 'studying' a monorail in the greater New Brunswick area.

I don't think my car/truck is the enemy. It takes me 5 min. to get work, 7 min. if I miss the light. Good thing I have heated seats, because my Tahoe does not get warm by the time I arrive at work. If I was to ride the bus it would mean 2 buses and at least a half hour and a 4 block walk to get to work. I am not sure they are running that early, as I must be on the floor about 4:50 am so I can tell the guys what I want them to do at 5:00 am.

Mass transit is out of the question for me.

Plus I have only put 23,000 miles on my truck in the 5 years I have owned it.

If you live that close you should bike to work, short trips are the worst for fuel economy and your car's engine...unless they have change the internal combustion engine significantly recently.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I have put so many miles on a bicycle you would be stunned. In my youth it was my primary source of transportation to well into my 20's.

But at this time in my life I have earned the right to drive what ever I want. I choose a Tahoe, because it works for me. It helps when I need to work on my rental house, it helps when I haul groceries. Plus I do get that tax deductions for using it to work on the rental house.

I don't care what effect it has on the engine or fuel economy. When it dies it will be a good excuse to buy a new one.

If you want to pedal your A$$ around feel free!
