I have been looking into the driving license issue, now this is just my understanding and bear in mind it differs per state. I think you can get an international permit that will allow you to drive for 6 months, in the state I am going to I will then have to sit an exam and take a road test.

If you look up the dmv website for the state you should be able to get more information there.

You really did to check with the BMV of your state. Ultimately they decide the rules. Each state can vary by a significant amount. Start there first!

Here in Ohio it is the BMV (Bureau, not Division or Dept.) although we tend to not did nothing until we get a DUI not a DWI or Impaired Driving as opposed to Driving Under the Influence which is completely different like a Felony is needed a Misdemeanor nor another charges .... hold my beer while I look for my card..... Only in Texas! (Where they have a DMV not a BMV but it doesn't matter anyway when your drink.)

In all seriousness though, your fiancee will have to get an International License from an approved agency and then she may or may not have to get a temp. license and/or take the test again. In most cases, as said above, the immigrant can use an International License for up to six months after arrival and then do whatever the state requires for compliance with local procedures.

If your fiancee can drive already, you're a lucky man. It's going to save you a thousand headaches after her arrival. If I had a Kopek for every time I heard "If I could drive I would be out of here." I'd be a thousandaire.

Like others have said, each state gets to make its own rules as to how it handles driver's licenses. However, those rules cannot be a burden on interstate commerce. So no state will have a rule that says you must have a driver's license exclusively from them in all situations in order to drive on their roads.

For example in California we have two rules on this subject:

"Adults Visiting California

Visitors over 18 years old with a valid driver license from their home state or country may drive in California without getting a driver license as long as their home state license remains valid.

New Residents

When you make your home here or take a job and you want to drive in California, you must apply for a California driver license within 10 days.

Residency is established by: voting in California elections; paying resident tuition at a California college or university; filing for a home owner’s property tax exemption; obtaining a license; or receiving any other privilege or benefit not ordinarily extended to nonresidents."
