we had to apply for noors ssc and after we applied it took around 7 days to receive it in the mail. He got his permanent resident card after maybe 2 and 1/2 weeks to get his green card and it was mailed to the house.

well..noor and i have different memories on how we applied... I think we waited until he got his green card before we applied for his ssc... He says he just used his visa to get the ssc and we applied before he got the green card.... by the way.. i really don't like most of these changes here in vj. anyway... I think you can apply from the day they get here...just MAKE SURE to have their passport with you at all times coz it is their id until the real ones come in.

Angel if he checked the box on his paperwork he turned into the embassy it is supposed to let SS know once he comes into POE. It usually is two or three weeks. If after two weeks you can go to the local office and inquire or apply for his ss card. Greencard not too sure on length of time to arrive. Good luck and so excited over your upcoming reunion.

RM 00202.315 Enumeration At Entry

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202315

Answer "Yes" to Questions 33a. and 33b.on Form DS-230

He will then need to allow at least 3 weeks to see if the Enumeration

At Entry process works. If he doesn't receive his SSN card within 3

weeks it's time to head on down to your friendly neighborhood

SSA office.

Find office:

http://www.ssa.gov/locator

If he has been assigned an SSN the office can provide him with the

number. However, it is has been over 14 days from the day the SSN was

assigned and he haven't received the card he will probably need to

apply for a replacement card.

Take proof of age, identity and work authorized alien status. Proof of

age is not needed for a replacement card.

Birth certificate, passport and I-551 card or MRIV with temporary I-551

language should be enough to take into the SSA office.

Lawfully Admitted for Permanent Residence

B. KINDS OF EVIDENCE ESTABLISHING LAPR STATUS

-- I-551, Permanent Resident Card

-- Machine Readable Immigrant Visa with Temporary I-551 Language

Note: The MRIV shows the alien's identification number ("A" number) as

the "Registration Number" in the upper right-hand corner of the MRIV.

If he applies in the SSA office for an original SSN or replacement card

the SSA office will try to verify his status through the SAVE system

while he is in the office. If they can't, they will send a form G-845

to immigration for manual verification. This could delay the assigning

of an SSN and/or issuing a card for weeks and some times months.

If the SSA office does send the G-845, suggest that he go back to the

SSA office every couple weeks with his documents to (1) ask them to

check SAVE again (2) ask if they sent a G-845 (3) if yes, did it come

back (4) after 30 days ask if they have followed up on the G-845 by

calling or sending another mark "second request."

RM 00203.735 Requesting Online (Primary) Verification By SAVE

After having waited at least 30 days and your local SSA office doesn't

seem too concerned about following up on the G-845 he can try contacting the SSA Regional Office (RO)

responsible for your state:

http://www.ssa.gov/pressoffice/natlpocontacts.html

Refer them to this:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203740

RM 00203.740 Requesting Additional (Manual) Verification By DHS

B. PROCEDURE – HOW TO REQUEST MANUAL VERIFICATION

STEP 6

DHS should respond to SSA within 15 federal work days after receiving

the Form G-845. If DHS does not respond within 15 federal work days from

the receipt of the G-845 from SSA, follow-up with the DHS, USCIS

Immigration Status office. (Allow 15 days plus five additional federal work days of

mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS.

Follow local practice to follow-up with DHS. Some SSA offices have an

arrangement with the DHS, USCIS office to telephone for the follow-up

contact; other SSA offices send a copy of the original G-845 annotated

“second request.”) If the DHS response is still not received within 15

federal work days after the follow-up contact (if the follow-up is by

mail allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845

to be received at and returned from DHS), make a second follow-up

contact. If the DHS response is not received within 15 federal workdays

(again, if the follow-up is by mail, allow five additional federal work

days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from

DHS), after two follow-ups, contact the RO. Also report to the RO any

trend that shows a serious deviation by DHS from the above time frames.

The RO will consult with central office.

2. Original (and new SSNs)

At least two documents are required and should be requested.

b. Aliens

A foreign born individual should always be requested to submit a foreign

birth certificate if one is in his/her possession or if one can be

easily obtained. However, if a foreign birth certificate does not exist

or cannot be obtained, accept alternative evidence of age.

The DHS document (e.g., I-551, I-94, or an employment authorization

document) establishes lawful alien status or work authorization and

either identity or age. If the DHS document is used to establish alien

status and identity, the alien must provide another document, such as a

passport or birth certificate, to establish age.

B. POLICY - FORM OF EVIDENCE

Evidence must be:

The original document, or a copy certified by the issuing agency or

custodian of the original record. Uncertified photocopies and notarized

copies are not acceptable.

A receipt from DHS showing the alien applied for the document is also

not acceptable. The applicant must present the actual document.

Angel- I was wondering the same things, thanks for bringing this up.

I was under the impression that right away (whether or not he checks yes in the ds230) if he goes to the ss office, he can pick up a "reciept" like paper that shows he has a number pending and not have to wait on the actual card to get a drivers license or a bank acct or go to work or school or anything he wants his ss number for. Is that all wrong?

We got the receipt stub with the information on it but received his ssc before we needed to use the receipt for anything.... I will say 1 thing though... keep their passports handy for a while..I still keep noors in my purse and I have had to use it multiple times so far. Even after the State ID and SSC we have had to use his passport (since thats where the visa is at) :D

also..remember to take things slowly, one day at a time, and keep the patience coz you'll need it after a few weeks.......... I can't wait to hear how the reunions went!!!!!!

Hey Amal-

Good to see you again!

You got me curious now...where have you had to show his visa? I thought that besides at the poe and when filling out I-9 at for a new employer, his status wasn't anyone else's business. Am I being naive?

P.S. you are scaring me with all the "have patience" advice. Its like your 3rd or 4th reference to that. Hope everything is ok.

Dawn,

You will need the passport for so many things it isn't funny. Now we have Abdel's state ID card I'm hoping that will lessen, but who knows. We even had to use it for his fishing license, which was his first piece of local ID.

If Amal is anything like me, what she is meaning by "be patient" is that it is just an adjustment to live with someone else, even when you love them. For example, I was used to sleeping spread-eagle on a king-size bed, but now I end up along one edge with Abdel pressed against me. I'm not complaining, just adjusting. Also, there is no more just rushing out the door to go somewhere. I have to remember to give 5 minutes notice and wait while he goes to the bathroom and finds his coat. These kinds of things are a little frustrating at first, but will ease up with time as you get used to them.

Amal, I do hope that's all you mean. None of us want to hear that someone got into a situation they didn't expect, but it does happen and we are here for anyone that does.

Posted

Yes girls that's absolutely what I mean...a complete life adjustment. I love my husband more than anything but some of the adjustments have been interesting. It's hard to have 2 views on how to do things when you're used to having it your own way for so long. Sometimes I get frustrated when I have to continually repeat myself. The first month.. I had no problem with it .. but about 1 to 2 weeks ago, I found myself really aggitated that I had to slow down and repeat myself. I think its coz I don't like to have to think of another way to phrase things to make it easier. Another example is .. keeping the house clean... he prefers spotless..I prefer semi-spotless so many times I get the question.."is it hard to put things in their place"...I haven't had to follow anyone elses rules for 10 years so its just hard to hear someone who is hard stuck on their own ways and dislikes my way of it. Really those are very small things and 99.999% of the time I don't even think about them and we are as perfect as I had imagined. So..yeah just time and patience on adjusting. I keep saying that because I think its been the hardest thing for me to keep control of (especially on bad days .. pms...grouchy days) I could go on for ages about it but i think I've written enough for now hehehe ... love you all!!!

uh-oh. now that time is flying I'm freaking myself out, maybe you guys are scaring me, I don't know. Maybe I should get us 2 apartments just in case I can't do this. Truth is, I've been on my own for 19 years now and thats a long time to be coming and going on my own time, and leaving dishes in the sink when I want, spending money on what I want, eating whatever I want, working late if I need to...this is probably bad but I don't want to share my bathroom or my car. I don't know if I can do this right. I know everybody is getting reunited and on with their lives, but I hope you guys keep coming here because I know I'm gonna need you ladies. Sorry if I diverted from the topic.
