Question and concern about checklist for packet 3...

So, my fiance mailed packet 3 back to the embassy today with checklist, ds230 (part 1), ds-156, ds-156k, and ds-157. I was looking over the copy he made of the checklist, and I got really confused... It said that the applicant should NOT sign DS-156, HOWEVER this was the electronic form that, on embassy's website, said TO sign. It also said we needed to complete that form in duplicate... does that mean he was supposed to make a copy of it for embassy??? Also, the only form out of all of those that said on the actual form to not sign was the ds-156K... which fiance did not sign. I'm so confused, and scared we messed up. Any advice or personal experience with this would be great.

Hi hon....

I looked up your embassy information here on VJ

In package 3, it says you receive:

IV-15 Checklist

Information on how to book your medical

Medical Questionnaire

Request download and filling in of:

DS-230-I Part I

DS-156 x2 (Fill out online to generate barcode http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/...electronic.html - Do not sign)

DS-156K (Do not sign) (K1/2 Only)

DS-157 (Male only)

and here it says what to mail back:

IV-15 and all forms in packet 3.

The consulate will not issue an interview date without receiving the IV-15 (checklist) so make sure to return it once you have procured all the forms.

2 copies of the DS-156 are needed and are not to be signed.

Also, the DS-156K is not to be signed.

Obviously, different embassies have different requirements, but I just looked at our checklist from Costa Rica and it says:

Complete and sign two DS-156 visa forms

Complete but don't sign form DS-156K

It makes sense that you wouldn't sign 156K because there's an oath that you have to take in front of the consular officer and then sign in front of him.

But I don't see why they would want you to not sign the 156.

I think it may be a typo.

I'm sure somebody going thru the English embassy will give you a more concrete answer.

I prepared my forms for packet 3 too and got confused with signing or not signing. It's so frustrating. It's said on the checklist in bold Do NOT sign the DS-156 form, so i didn't sign it. I only signed DS-230 Part I. I hope it's all right, cause i'm getting really nervous.

Yeah it is very confusing... my fiance called the embassy helpline and they were helpful. I guess either the checklist or the actual forms need to be updated. They just try to confuse you to see how crazy they can make you feel.

In Bogota, you only have to send DS-230 (Part I) and a OF-169 signed stating that all the documents are ready. The DS-156 is a form to use to pay for the visa fee, and show it at the interview. DS-156K will be taken to the interview and sign in front of a consul. That's all folks!
