I know the AOS takes between 120-180 days. Has anyone ever experienced this process taking longer than the 180 days? We'd like to take a trip to my husband's hometown around July/August...and not sure if I should file for AP or just wait the 180 days for the AOS.

We were very lucky in that ours took only 4 months from filing...However, there are some couples out there who have definately waited longer than 6 months.

I think it's always advisable to apply for AP, because you just never know when you're going to have fly home at a moment's notice.

The 120-180 days I imagine is only a very general guideline!

03.04.2009......Posted I-130 to U.S. Embassy

03.04.2009......Ordered Police Certificate for Visa Purposes from Local Garda Office (ordered over the phone)

03.05.2009......I-130 received at Embassy

03.06.2009......Received Police Cert

03.18.2009......I-130 Approved

09.10.2009......Medical Exam

09.23.2009......Embassy receives Notice of Readiness

10.13.2009......Received our interview date

10.29.2009......Successful interview!

11.5.2009........Visa received in post

11.7.2009........All the family flew to the US together :)

We applied for AOS 16 months ago and we're still waiting for an interview date. We had one scheduled last year but it was cancelled with no explanation given. That was 9 months ago. We had put a lot of things on hold until after AOS like my wife working, buying a house, me changing jobs, having a baby, etcetera. We finally decided to move on with our lives because we really have no clue when they are going to reschedule our interview and they won't tell us anything.

So the answer is yes, it sometimes takes more than 180 days. I think it depends on what office you go through. Mine is Tampa and it's very slow.

Check out the timelines for your district office. When I checked ours (Denver) it seemed the average was 3 to 5 months - so based on that I didn't apply for AP (which we wanted in about 8 months.) Yes some cases can be held up for almost no understandable reason but you can go by the averages for your district office and apply for AP if you feel you are lagging behind what you expected. Good Luck

I would say most people wait 6 months or more for the interview. Even if you get it sooner than that, you could end up in the same boat we are in - an incomplete security check. Our interview was successful so far as proof of relationship, but nearly 2 months after the interview and 6 months since filing, we still have no green card.

AP isn't generated at the local office. NBC in Missouri will issue it.

If you file for it now you MIGHT have it by early July.

I believe if you did a timeline search you will find several that took longer than 180 days, some even over one year and a few over two years.

If you really need to travel you should apply for AP and travel using that. Even if the AOS interview will happen within the timeframe they give, there's still a possibility of waiting for a long security check to be completed, or a gc card can come with an error on it and then it takes time to fix it too, and lots of other things can happen which hopefully won't happen and I don't want to sound negative, but you never know what kind of surprise uscis has in store for you :P
