Hi there! I have a question about sponsors and co-sponsors on the K1 visa...

My fiance and I have been living in Costa Rica for over 7 years. He's from Colombia and I am from Puerto Rico (...YES, we are US citizens...). We filed a K1 because we want to live in the U.S. and finally got the NOA2 on February 6.

A month ago I moved to the U.S. in order to secure a job, anticipating the sponsorship requirement, which I did. I am earning well over the minimum salary requirement for sponsorship - this is not the problem...

...The problem is that people from Puerto Rico do not file federal income taxes and we do not file for Puerto Rican taxes when working outside the U.S., so I do not have the federal income tax requierement. Question is: will I need a co-sponsor from the U.S. that filed federal taxes during the last 2 years??

Does anyone know the answer???

Thanks a bunch!! B)

I'm confused. If both of you are US citizens, which you say you are in your post and I bolded the part I refer to, why did you file a K1???

He is not a USC, he is Columbian. But she is from Puerto Rico. She was just pointing out that although PR is not a state, she is a US citizen. "We" referred to Puerto Ricans, not both Mari and Diego.

Mari y Diego. I don't think you would need a co-sponsor. If you were not required to file taxes because of the circumstances you mentioned, then you should include a statement saying so. I'm guessing there should be a bulletin or something on the US IRS & Puerto Rican IRS (lol. I don't know what to call it) websites that you can print out and cite as evidence. Send you PR taxes for the years you have, and perhaps paystubs.

I'm sure someone from PR will post, but this is my best guess.
