Yes, but you will probably need a subpoena to do it.

Yahoo messenger? You would need something substantial, such as someone making terrorist threats and opening an investigation for law enforcement to backtrack them. Even then, if it isn't a national security issue I doubt they will take random threats from people seriously - the resource requirements are high.

They can pull the IP address and go backwards to their ISP, however there could be other factors such as privacy web sites who try to mask the routes from the real source.

If it is just someone sending random sexual or annoying messages, maybe you could just block their ID.

Yahoo Inc will likely have information as to who sent the messages and when and will keep it for a period of time. But unless this turns into a criminal case of some sort, you wont be able to get that information from Yahoo.

The police won't do anything unless the messages included specific threats of violence.

Cancel your current YIM ID and open up a new one. Only give it to family and friends you can trust and do NOT put it on any MYSpace, or similar, pages where anyone can find the information.

During an active chat you can trace the originating IP from a DOS command. Offline messages are nearly impossible. Did the person send you an IM message or an email. If you have an email then yes it can be traced to the end users IP.

I have been in the same position while we were still in the process of completing the K-1 visa. We were still apart then and something like that really put so much pressure in the relationship. I have been slandered by an unknown person by sending messages & false accusations about me to my fiance (now my hubby) and even sent emails, YM messages, even posted a my space blog, just to destroy our relationship. And even threatened me before I took my interview. I really couldn't understand why people couldn't be happy with other's people's happiness. Anyway, to make the long story short, I referred that case to my lawyer friend and he said that it was hard to prove something like that without substantial evidence. So, he advised me to just ignore it and truly the person stopped from sending messages and always remember that people like that won't succeed. For as long as your love is strong enough to withstand the test then you will stay together forever.

It's easy enough if you have a web server you control.

Then you can "trick" the person that's harassing you into "checking out some pics" (for example)

and capture their IP address.

Once you have their IP, all you have to do is a whois lookup to see who owns the IP block

his IP belongs to and go after the ISP.

Generally you would need a subpoena to get the subscriber information from the ISP, but there

are ways around it.

Just curious how can you possibly trace the end users IP? I was in the same position with the OP before but I kept all the emails from that unknown person and yes it is not safe to post personal info at my space because I believe that person got the info of my hubby's family through my space.I even reported that my space profile but got no reply from my space management. But now, i care less about it after all we are now happily married and enjoying our life together.
