Hello fellow MENA folks,

Has anyone with a Moroccan spouse tried to extend or renew their passport from here in the states? My husband's passport expires in 2009, and we're wondering how long it takes, whether it is a smooth process, etc.

We did look on the Moroccan consulate's web page, and they had kinda contradictory information on there...on the one hand it says it takes about 10 days, on the other hand, it says to apply early, and that it can be done up to 18 months in advance. Hmm...

Also, we never registered my husband with the consulate or registered our marriage with the consulate. I hope that is not a problem. Also, I think that we will need to apply for a "family book," since we have a baby on the way.

Have those of you with kids registered the birth of your children with the consulate, or have you applied for a Moroccan passport for your little ones? I wonder if it is necessary, or if they are ok with just an American passport?

Sorry this is such a random post. Lots of questions and I'm not in the mood to edit right now :star: .

Have a happy Friday,

Carolyn

We have a friend here who renewed his paaport through the consulate and it wasnt a big deal but I am not sure how long it took, I'll ask him and get back to you on that.

As far as the marriage registration and family book and all of that, no, we havent done any of it either although I keep telling myself we need to. I am sure an American passport is fine, its just that as a child of a Moroccan father they are entitled to Moroccan citizenship and benefits if they so desire and the only way to get that taken care of is to do the registration with the consulate.

Maybe someone else around here has done it?

We are about to have to do this. My husband's passport is either expired now, or is about to and we are hoping to travel to Maroc in September. Haven't started yet, but I'll post the experience when we do it.

edit: we have also not reg'd w/ the consulate, plan to do that at the same time.

Hi,

We just did this and it is so easy. The consulate had actually lost my husbands id card a couple of years ago when he tried to register. So here is how it goes. We went to the consulate in New York and they took care of everything and was finished in about an hour. He extended his passport, registered with the consulate and they sent for him another moroccan id card. He got his passport back right then but the id card had to be sent to Rabat and it takes about 8 weeks to get it back. We also never registerd our marriage at the consulate and still haven't. We decided to do that on another trip to New York.

According to the moroccan consulate website if you don't have your national id card you have to go to the consulate to do all of this but if you do then you can do it by mail. However, when my husband tried to register by mail and sent his id card to the consulate they lost it, so my advice would be if you can go to New York do it in person.

Hi everyone

I know I saw a different thread about this a while ago, but it didn't turn up on my search.

So, is there a problem with NOT registering the marriage? How can we do that anyway? I think I read somewhere about how to do it, and why. And also why it might be a problem since we weren't married in a mosque or anything. My husband's passport expires in January, which I know is a little ways off, but... well, I just happened to remember about it for some reason. I know myself - if I don't take care of it now, I'll forget again until it's probably too late.

Sigh

Anyway, we would appreciate any information anyone can give us about this whole process. I hope we don't really have to drive the whole way to NY, but then again, I don't want his ID card to get 'lost'.....

Hello. Response to your renewing passport issue. We are currently faced with this issue of renewing my husband's moroccan passport. One expensive option is to file form I-131 Travel Document for $305 and renew passport in Morocco. As far as the children, they only need USA passport. My husband traveled to Morocco 2 summer's ago. We are planning our anticipated trip to Morocco this summer for the month of June, inchaallah. If there is a less expensive way, then I would like to know. Thanks so much!

Hi there,

We just extended my husband's passport (and registered with the consulate at the same time) through the mail at the Moroccan consulate in NY. Filling out the paperwork was a bit confusing and time-consuming, but it only took about 10 days to receive his passport back in the mail  .

We haven't tried to get his Moroccan ID card renewed. We're hoping to visit Morocco before that expires.

Finally got a hold of the embassy and they told us that Morocco is now issuing new biometric passports, so if you have an old passport and want to renew it, you can't. You have to get a new passport and in order to do that, you need to go to the consulate in New York for fingerprints and whatnot :( looks like Brahim won't be having a passport for awhile lol

This is a useful forum...

Here is my experience: I had to renew my passport since I've already extended it once, so I had to go to NY for my fingerprints. I need the passport before the 30 of April because that's when I'm going home. Well I think the consulate sent my paperwork to Morocco on the 5th and they said it could take up to 3 weeks for the passport to return.

Bottom line, I have no way of making sure the passport will get here on time. I checked the passport website and it says it's in the first phase out of three total. The website is: www.passeport.ma

Make duaa for me !!!
