But if there are illegal workers protesting then thats ALL thats gonna be picked up by the media - so any hope of proper immigration reform (and publicity for same) will be LOST IMO.

Can I claim my 'right' in the American Dream to live in Beverley Hills and have millions of $'s?

Without working for it?

By the way - has America come to a standstill yet? :D

(and IMO the cry of 'no illegal workers = higher prices' is a SMOKESCREEN - plenty of places NOT using illegals manage to compete effectively in markets - what the people who say this really mean, IMO, is 'lower profits for bosses and shareholders)

Right. I read somewhere that there would be an increase of only a couple of cents for a head of lettuce if farmers would have to hire 'legal' workers. It is a smoke screen.

Go talk to Spain and take that history class again.

The media portrays these illegal immigrants as hard workers, sure they are! Heck one illegal immigrant even admits that he *loves* paying his taxes. Sure he does! Why wouldn't he? His wife has cancer and receives the best *FREE* medical care from hospitals/oncologists, his son receives *FREE* education and *FREE* emergency care when he needed surgery. Of course he doesn't mind paying his taxes, what's a couple of $$$ compared to free healthcare and education?

In the long run, this is going to hurt the economy. I wish the media would focus on that, the healthcare cost is rising as it tries to accommodate undocumented immigrants. Millions of dollars are spent caring for people who are here illegally. Likewise, the quality of education will deteriorate as more schools try to focus on teaching English, rather than concentrating on improving the curriculum.

I don't think everybody sees the bigger picture.

there are many countries that are much poorer than Mexico. We should allow them all to break the law too.

I have to clarify something. I made this post last night immediately after watching the news where they had done this whole story concerning the Mexican illegal immigrant community. A guy was on the telly saying that he snuck over for a shot at a better life, and that's what this post was reacting to. It is worth pointing out that I am against ALL illegal immigration....not specifically just Mexican

That being said, I am getting dressed to go to work!

I should have rented a white van and put this on the side

us_customs_enforce.jpg

made a jacket like this

us_immigration_and_customs_enforcement_arrest.jpg

and drove to some protests.

You know what I wish we could see? I wish that when these illegals protest tomorrow the INS shows up with a few hundred buses and start rounding up the ones without green cards. Then just drive them to the border and kick them out. I think we would see a lot less protesting then.

Rounding up everyone without green cards would not be appropriate. Those that enter the country on the K-3 visa adjust status after they arrive and have to wait for their green cards. If they did what you feel they should do, they could be shipping people out of the country that are here legally and have struggled through this process as we all are. Not everyone here legally has a green card.

I think you know what I meant. Anyone that isn't here legaly should be rounded up and sent packing. I still stand behind the idea.

It won't happen. In any case, I don't support mass deportations. The law clearly needs to be changed - while the US still has the law that grants automatic citizenship to anyone born within its borders, this issue will be extremely problematic.

You try to deport millions of people, break up families - children who are here legally but parents and other family members who are not, you'll have a recipe for significant civil unrest.

I don't support or condone illegal immigration, but this issue has been handled so badly and ineffectually over the last few decades that some sort of amnesty will simply be inevitable.

Tightening up immigration law, providing better border security and significantly reforming the system (not only the USCIS but law enforcement agencies as well) is really all you can do, and much better in the long run than mass deportations.

I felt the need to comment about this because there are a lot of people taking this stand, and I've actually heard of some trying to do this themselves. Recently on the way to work a guy called into the local radio station proud that he was going out looking for hispanics, offering them construction jobs and a ride to the site then dropping them off at the immigration office demanding they be deported.

Although he had no way of knowing if they were illegal or not, he had decided for himself that if they were hispanic, they were here illegally should all be rounded up deported and if the government wasn't going to do it he would. Amazingly the DJ cheered him on and backed up his stance.

This bothers me greatly

I think it's safe to say that there will be a predominant number of illegals protesting today.
