I have a job interview on Tuesday ..... it is for an organization called Senior Helpers..... they hire people to go into older people's homes to be a companion or help with household chores etc...

they lady asked me if I had 2 personal references and 2 work references.... do you think the personal references could be from family members, like my sis-in-law??

or I could get a reference from a family friend back in Canada... do you think they just want a phone number or do they want some kind of letter??

I do have 2 work references... just phone numbers to call though... although the one reference is from about 10 years ago.. is that too old?? I know they would give me a glowing reference, I was with that family for almost 3 years........

I have never really been to a formal job interview before....

I think they prefer personal references be from other than family but if that is all you have what else can you do. A business reference from 10 yrs ago is not too old in my opinion. I would provide phone numbers and address if you have it and if they want they will call......

YMMV

All you need to give them is names and phone numbers, e-mails if you have them. What will most likely happen is they will call each one of them and ask questions about you. The best thing to do is give your references a heads up that they might get a call regarding this issue so they're not surprised when they answer the phone. Also, this helps them get ready for any questions your future employer may have about you.

And yes, personal references can be family members unless they specifically say they have to be non-related.

Just don't give Master Troll as a personal reference. I learnt the hard way. PETA never phoned me back after that.

Good Luck!

You can absolutely give references from Canadian folks, I did that. Explain to the interviewer that you recently moved, etc. Check out the career websites for information on how to handle the interview questions and the like. I'm sure you'll do fantastic my dear friend!!!!

ok I have one work reference all lined up.. I messaged one of the kids I use to babysit and she is going to ask her parents if it is ok but she is sure it will be....

I really miss that family... :( I was almost part of the family those 3 years i worked for them ... I did keep in contact for awhile but then we lost touch... but a few months ago I found 3 of the kids on Facebook...

now I just have to figure out another job reference seeing as how I have no number now for the other one...

ok, I thought of another couple that I could possibly use a work reference but they are from long time ago too..

I am also working on getting reference form the prison I used to work at but I am guessing these people want references that have to do with care giving...
