Why is there a need to scare those who want to try to help others?

I am curious as to why when people give out the wrong information, they are not only reprimanded, but negatively mobbed here on this forum.

I attempted to help someone in another thread, and apparently was mis-information. However, he did figure out his solution after chatting with me a couple of times. I did directed him to the correct place to find it. Yet, there's no understanding between those who tried to help, and those who don't. Instead, I'm being chatised for giving incorrect information. This will lead to anyone providing help or assistance to fall away from helping.

In the case above, I failed to seek the information for him at the place where he could find that information because he needed to dig through some materials. That is because I didn't dig it for him. Geezes.

A mentor isn't your teacher who has the answers. They work as guidance. We as helpers are similar to mentors.

The answer is, if you aren't SURE, shut your trap!

I do hope it WILL discourage people from handing out advice on subjects they know nothing about....

The lesson is I think, if you are just 'guessing' with information the best thing is to not offer it at all. Misinformation is the bane of ANY immigration site.

I think it is really great that you try and help the other people here who need help with questions. I appreciate getting help and I try and make an educated guess based on the information thanks for those who appreciate you. regina

i have no idea the specifics that this thread is referring to... and i dont care to go read up on the other thread to find out...

i will say this tho...

i used to try to help others... yet, even when i posted based directly on the process that my husband and i had just completed, i would be told that i was wrong by someone... i mean, it could be something as simple as that my hubby got the EAD stamp without asking at JFK, and someone would have to come along and say thats wrong, that you have to ask... our visa experience was obviously not valid... so, i stopped posting help...

on the flip side, ive also stopped posting to ask questions too... i just search thru the forums, check the guides and links, and will call the USCIS for any further questions... its not that others advice is not appreciated... just ultimately it is my responsibility to find the information and discern what is necessary / important and what is not, no matter what other posters may or may not advise

Let me see if I have understood your suggested logic approach:

A man goes into a department store to buy a tie for the suit he has on. He goes to the tie department and is greeted by two salesmen. The man explains that he needs help because he is on his way to propose marriage to his true love but that his tie got ruined and he needs a replacement. Further he explains to the two salesman that he is colorblind so he needs their help in selecting an appropriate tie.

Salesman1 says, No problem, I have the perfect tie for you. Here it is! Salesman2 says, No, no...THIS is the perfect tie for your suit! The man looks at the two ties which seem to him to be incredibly different looking and asks Salesman1 what he thinks of Salesman2's choice. Salesman1 says, I said THIS is the PERFECT tie for you. Are you listening to me? I am HELPING YOU! The man asks the same question to Salesman2 and gets the same response given by Salesman1.

The man, discerning that both of the Salesmen are lying to him and that they know nothing about selecting a coorrdinating tie, selects one himself from the table, purchases it and goes off to meet his love. On seeing him, she exclaims, "Yikes! Honey, where did you get that tie!!!"

Scenario 2:

A man goes into a department store to buy a tie............

Salesman1 says well, Sir, I am also colorblind, but I have been told that I am really good at matching patterns together. So, why don't I select 4 or 5 ties that I think are a great match with your suit, in terms of patterns and then we can ask someone else to help on picking the perfect color choice for your tie from that subset.

Salesman2 says, you know, I am pretty darn good at matching colors, I think I can help with your plan. The three men quickly select a tie that all concur is a wonderful choice.

The man purchases the tie and goes off to meet his love. On seeing him, she exclaims, "Wow, you look fabulous! and that tie!! a perfect match! ....just like us....

ConsoleMaster, to think that it is somehow "helpful" for posters to state their passing thoughts as fact and then let the original poster (or others) somehow "discern" that those thoughts, in fact, are not fact is lazy, conceded and most decidely UNHELPFUL.

You're O.K. in my book ConsoleMaster. It is probably advisable to check and re check any information you get from any source on the internet, especially when it concerns bureaucratic procedures/paperwork.
