Why is there a need to scare those who want to try to help others?

I am curious as to why when people give out the wrong information, they are not only reprimanded, but negatively mobbed here on this forum.

I attempted to help someone in another thread, and apparently was mis-information. However, he did figure out his solution after chatting with me a couple of times. I did directed him to the correct place to find it. Yet, there's no understanding between those who tried to help, and those who don't. Instead, I'm being chatised for giving incorrect information. This will lead to anyone providing help or assistance to fall away from helping.

In the case above, I failed to seek the information for him at the place where he could find that information because he needed to dig through some materials. That is because I didn't dig it for him. Geezes.

A mentor isn't your teacher who has the answers. They work as guidance. We as helpers are similar to mentors.:angry::angry:

Maybe the person figured out the coirrect information only as a result of persitance because they simply refused to believe what you posted intitially and several times subsequent. BTW, you did not direct the poster to the USCIS website in your first postings....

Had the poster accepted your initial answer as "gospel" then they would be traveling down a very wrong path. Also, had you "qualified" you answer with "It is my understanding" or something to that affect rather than posting as if it was the defacto answer ... the replies that were attempting to correct your mis-information would have been very different..... YMMV

Hmm...There was not too much clarity into his posts. Reason, he is withholding information that I may not know, etc...and didn't re-affirm why I was wrong until he dug it up.

Anyway, obtaining a Re-Entry Permit has no bearing on his inability or ability to enter the USA anyway.

What information did the OP withhold?

Scare and ridicule.

Some people only see things in black and white. Sadly, there is a lot of gray area in this whole process. If I have learned anything, it is that there is no "Gospel" in all this, no matter what anyone thinks.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

fwayguy,

He did some research already, and posted the thread. I read that posted thread, and still unsure of somethings. And the OP continued to follow up because he does know that I'm wrong, however, he continued to post. I didn't catch on to him until after Fez started attacking me. The OP didn't raise a question. Thereafter, he pulled the statement from the USCIS site explaining the rules regarding GC travel. That is where I learned why I was wrong. Should I known I was wrong, I would've went out to dig it up too. But, he saved me the time.

I agree! We are laypeople here. Gospel does not exist.

If you were not 100% sure about the information you gave could you not just have said that in your first post? Even saying 'I was never actually in this situation myself' would have helped.

You berated the OP for not reading what you wrote and were then surprised by their response?

You said you were scared but I think that if I were the OP and read your post and suddenly panicked because I thought I needed additional authorisation I'd be scared myself!

Well, if I think there is a possibility that I am wrong, I don't post. ;) Or I make a disclaimer: 'I think you need this' rather than trying to sound authoritative.

If I had been in the same situation then I'd post and say 'this worked for me'.

The problem was, I think, that you sounded very authoritative in your reply and it threw the OP off, just as it would have done me.

Most of us just want to help but we also have to make sure that we are really helping and not causing more confusion. Immigration is an ares where small mistakes can be very costly to the immigrant.

If you don't have concrete information or experience about certain things, it might be wise to premise it as such. That way, those seeking help will know to wait on other people who might have more concrete information or experience to respond to their questions.

Let me tell you something.

If you are an investor or a gambler, do you risk yourself? You take risks in order to find out. Scientists experiment with things. They are unsure of things as well, and we rely on scientists. But, they too must take risk to do things. You do not know your wrong until you try.

Hmm....That is the point. How do you know your wrong, until afterwards? I'm sure you are the same.

Let me turn this around... If you had not specifically researched this topic previously or you din not have direct personal experience... how could you know you were even remotely correct?

YMMV
