DeeBee, you can travel freely in and out of the United States on a 2-year green card and valid passport. You do not need a re-entry permit if you are going to be overseas for only a few weeks.

I traveled to my home country 1½ years ago with only my 2-year green card and passport. Upon returning to the United States, I went straight to the residents/citizens immigration line at the airport.

:)

PS. Also, you may wish to check if you need a travel visa to go to Switzerland from the US. In my case, I didn't need a travel visa for travel between the US and Singapore.

A green card, and a re-entry permit which the color is green is not the same thing! READ CAREFULLY! I am helping you.

A green card doesn't inherently allow you to re-enter the US. You need the re-rentry permit as well.

This is the biggest load of misinformation I have seen in a long time....

Unless you are planning to be outside the USA for more than 12 months you do NOT need a re-entry permit... all you need is your valid Greencard and a valid Passport... you do not need to use the US-Visit system when entering or departing and on return you go through the USC/Residents line at Immigration.. you dont need to complete an I-94 only the white Customs form....

A Greencard does inherently allow for re-entry to the US and is work authorized....

Have a good trip home

I'm not gonna hold my breath on getting a reply on that one...

:ot2::ot2::ot2:

Can anyone tell me about the process? Especially whether or not a GC holder has to use the US-Visit terminal when exiting?

Many thanks...

No, you do not use the US-Visit terminal when exiting since you're not longer a visitor. You are now a legal permanent resident of the USA. :)

The point being is that he found his information. Don't you get it. Did I not say to look at the USCIS website? Hmm...Noone was listening. I didn't bother to look at the site because this problem doesn't apply to me.

I got my Permanent Resident card recently, and will be going out of the country to visit my family for a couple of months. I've left/entered the country numerous times on visas, but never on a GC, so I'm just wondering "what there is to know"?

I guess my main question is that I'm used to going up to the US-Visit machine when I leave... Will I still need to do that?

And when I return, I just show my GC and passport?

Many thanks...

I think the best advice is to call to USCIS and ask them :) I had same question and we called to USCIS many times regarding this issue as my husband was offered a job overseas .. and they told us that having a green card we don't need anything else as it is my travel document.. but if you live outside of US more than 6 months you need to apply for re-enrty permit so you will not lose your status.. I hope i was helpful :)

Exactly.

Green card is "Permanent Residence" authorize to work, stay, travel. Re- Entry permit is needed if you stay out of US for over a period of time specified in USCIS terms which is 12 months. have a good trip my friend even im traveling on april wont be applying for a re- entry permit because i wont be out of US for more then 4 weeks.

#######! I'm wasting their time helping them FIND information!? Many information can be found at the USCIS site. Where were you when the OP asked?

Yes you are right it can be found on the USCIS website...... but if we told everyone to go and find the information themselves, then what would be the purpose of having Visa Journey forum.... this is a place where people can come and ask question and get support.... you delibratly giving misleading and totaly inacurate information in the hope that people will go and find out the info is just wrong.... As for your notion that you are helping them.... belive me you are not..

It's pointless to get you to understand. If you know it, then why weren't here to help him. Some people need guidance or don't know where to go for help. That may also be an assumption that we can make too. You never know. I hope you understand this. I attempted to help, and he figured it out by himself.

The point of this forum is to assist, not to scare people away from helping.

You need to file I-131 for a Re-Entry permit. This will allow you to re-enter the USA without a passport. It's very important that you do get this green (re-entry) permit (a small book like a passport) .

Please explain how the above post is helping someone????? there is not one piece of correct info in that post...

What are you talking about? Didn't you read what I put in the last two post. If he figured out the solution, there's no need to dig up the other posts. It'll lead to problem.

You know, he had doubts in what I told him. So he's smart for following up with posts to object to my posts. It's a good thing! Don't you see?
