Documents to prove immi status?

Planning ahead here... Post-K1-marriage, pre-green-card, what documents should the intending immigrant carry on his/her person to prove immigration status?

I have read that the law requires proof of immigration status, but what does the immigrant possibly have to show? Really curious...

The K-1 immigrant has a K-1 visa stamp in his/her passport, which is the documentation he/she should keep on themselves until they receive their green card.

My hubby carried his passport (which had his K1 visa inside). When the K1 expires, I think the K1 visa plus the NOA1 for AOS should be sufficient. Once my hubby had a state issued ID we got a little lax. I do know that technically, he should've had his passport at all times.

I applied for an EAD along with my AOS and used that to prove my valid immigration status in the US. It was good to have since it took nearly 2 years to approve our AOS and I had to renew the EAD once - and was getting close to having to renew it a second time when the AOS was approved. The EAD should take approximately 90 days to process so use your passport and your NOA1 until the EAD arrives.
