(CNN) – Geraldine Ferraro has stepped down from her role as a member of Hillary Clinton's finance committee.

In a letter to Clinton obtained by CNN's Suzanne Malveaux — who spoke with the former vice presidential candidate shortly after she sent it to Clinton — Ferraro said she is stepping down so, "I can speak for myself and you can continue to speak for yourself about what is at stake in this campaign."

In a phone conversation with Malveaux, Ferraro said she was not asked to step down by Senator Clinton or her campaign.

Ferraro said thousands of people are part of the finance committee, saying it is not a staff position, but a voluntary one for those who raise money for the campaign. She also said she has raised $125,000 for Senator Clinton.

When asked if she had any regrets about what she said, Ferraro replied, "absolutely not."

"I am who I am and I will continue to speak up." She added that she thought it was a shame that the Obama campaign was trying to block her First Amendment rights, and that she felt that was no way to conduct a campaign.

She said, "it's not me slicing and dicing," a reference to Obama's comments earlier in the day accusing Ferraro of dividing the party.

Ferraro said David Axelrod, Obama's campaign manager and an acquaintance, should have called her to ask her the intention of her remarks, which she says the Obama campaign used to hurt Clinton.

When asked how she felt about Hillary Clinton distancing herself from her remarks, Ferraro replied, "I am perfectly fine," and that there were no hard feelings. She said she understands what Clinton is going through, and understands that being part of a presidential campaign is "very hard."

Her words speak volumes.

The only people who don't see the racism in her words are those blinded by their own racism.

Exactly! I am so tired of people being all over the mans race! Her remarks were racist and purely ignorant. Now she steps down cause she knew she was wrong for saying it. Sorry she had diarreah (sp) of the mouth, but she really needed to take some pepto for that #######.

people say racist stuff to me and around me all the time, now I don't think that they are die hard KKK racists, but there remarks are racist non the less. Whats bad, is they don't even know hoe offensie and racist they are. That is IGNORANCE! Plain and simple....she is ignorant if she didn't see a problem with what she said.

I wouldn't say she was exactly racist - but her comments certainly were a bit stupid; and (given her experience) she should have known better rather than to inject race into the debate in such a way as to suggest that its a primary motivating factor in Obama's success. I don't think she had any business doing that IMO, nor did she make a point that had any factual (or authoritative) substance.

On one hand she suggested that BO reaching this point in the campaign race is to do with his race and media exposure, is a tad insulting - not only to BO, but to the voters who actually support his candidacy on policy issues.

On the other she undermined herself, and her own qualifications by suggesting that the only reason she was selected as a Vice-presidential candidate was because she is a woman. Does that strike anyone else as a bit weird?

Always blame someone else for opening yer trapper... that's not mature...

She's also overstating the importance, honesty or intelligence of her statements. Statements which were neither important, honest or intelligent.

I caught this one too!!! What is wrong with this woman? How can state....in a factual manner....that just because Barack is Black he is not qualified. God if this doesnt sound like the racist and prejudice issues that Blacks and many other minorities had to overcome is this country then I don't know what does. The thing is....it shows her and many other Americans true colors and thoughts on Blacks and minorites in the country. They are so obsessed with our race its ridiculous. If I worried about the next white woman or white man as much as they analyzed Blackness then I would have literally killed myself already.

I am a minority in this country and it would be seriously ridiculous for me or any minority to analyze Whites (the majority) the way they analyze us. I didn't anaylze the Whiteness of EVERY OTHER president canididate in all my years of living, so why do people analyze his Blackness?

Marlita. You are a racist. GF said exactly what is intuitively obvious, no more. Barack has only aspired to this level, all other things equal, because he's the "novelty" black and has rode the liberal media's "man crush" on him for no other reason other than he was/is (when it's convenient for him) black man with a microphone that gave a "great" speech at the convention a few years ago.

No one can rationally explain his rise otherwise. GF pointed out that anyone, male or female, with similar or even exact credentials in all else other than race would not have been given the same attention, and outright biased encouragement than this "black" man.

He a charlatan that I hope is soon exposed for what he is.

Oddly enough the idea that people have en-masse supported Barack Obama in the primary for no other reason than he's the "novelty black" and a liberal media "man crush" is actually less rational than the idea that people might actually support him for what he stands for.

Sigh. I've said it before. Anyone who thinks Obama got to where he is because of race is a fcuking moron living in some alternative United States. The day someone succeeds BECAUSE they are black in this country is the day I might expect world peace.

If he's succeeded because he's black, then why haven't any of the other prominent black politicians won presidential elections?

And another thing. Most of the media (and that's a big big majority) is owned by conservative corporations with a certain amount of control over editorial. The idea that the media is liberal is so effing silly I can't even believe someone would mean it.

PS: I have a pretty good explanation for Obama's popularity. Ready? OK:

People like him. And his policies are sound. It's been a long time since anyone could feel like they might enjoy having dinner with a candidate, especially on the Dem side. That excites people. Get over it.

Good luck with that ;)

I'm sure there will be a maestro-style response forthcoming.

OMG! I am a RACIST??!!! You know if we ever had a face to face......

I am a racist for telling people to IGNORE his race....yes I am a racist. The only people who mention his race are the ones who seemingly are annoyed by it or threatened by it or whatever else. For the life of me I really don't understand why people are so on the man's race. he is not the Black messiah!!! There are hundreds of other Black people who are highly respected in the world. Why would their race have anything to do with that respect.

Honestly to me...it sounds racist that people want to tear him down simply because he is a Black man. THAT dear sir, is the same hatred and racism that Blacks have been going through since the beginning of this country and its really getting old and thankfully other races besides Blacks are seeing it and realizing it and are NOT standing for it ANYMORE! Don't be mad that this country is finally about evolution and change and that the president who happens to be speaking on this is Black.....ANY of the other White presidential candidates could've been about the same thing. This isn't your grandmothers country anymore sir and if you are not ready for where its going...then you are free to leave!

Oh, goody.

Apparently not. He's buggered off.

The weird thing with Kaydee is that he makes these statements - but never really delves into the arguments behind them, or fleshes them out in more detail.

Apparently its enough simply to repeat the same old ####### over and over and over again.
