New oil shock ahead as $100 spike looms

The growing international crisis over Iran's nuclear programme could trigger a catastrophic oil price spike, sending crude prices over $100 a barrel, senior Wall Street analysts are warning.

[...]

A single political shock could be enough to send oil markets into panic, said Adam Sieminski, senior energy economist at Deutsche Bank in New York. 'If we have one more big problem we are going to have triple-digit oil prices.' Sieminski points to confrontation with Iran, a worsening of the situation in Iraq or a recurrence of devastating hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico as potential catalysts for a major rise.

The growing international crisis over Iran's nuclear programme...

The only international crisis over Iran is one that the U.S. and Israel's cheering section has made. WMD's Part II

America imports 65% of our consumption. We have painted ourselves into a corner that it can't drill ourself out of. Drilling more in the USA will help, but the real cure is not so painless. It will also involve changing present bad habits that should have been learned from supply shocks 20+ years ago. Conservation, fuel efficiency, and alternative transportation.

I'm more worried about no gas than I am about expensive gas. I've lived through both and gasoline shortages/rationing sucks.

Not enough of us really use 'em. They are recreational rather then for commuting or getting around, in many cases.

I actually did have a bike, which I lent to my brother when I was spending a large amount of time in Ireland, along with a car and cellphone, all of which were destroyed by the time I returned and the bike I have yet to replace. But even if this wasn't the case, for me, riding a bike instead of driving would almost never be practical, given where I live.

well it depends on where you live, in the city, I'm sure you could figure it out, but in the suburbs around me, it'd be tough to say the least.

Exactly! And even if you don't use your car for work, it would still be tough! I live 15 miles from where I work, go down a lot of very narrow, busy roads, and I carry a huge bag of students work, books, my laptop, etc. PLUS- I try to look professional at school, the bike ride would totally kill that!
