Renting a car on CA side to drive across entire US side

YOu can do U-Haul one way, but not car rentals.

Delicia, Buffalo airport would be closer and better for you than Detroit. Detroit is nearly 5 hours drive to Toronto, Buffalo is less than 2 hours.

July 14th - biometrics

July 16 - cases available online

Aug 6th - card production ordered (EAD)

Delicia, I rented a car from the buffalo airport for a week(unlimited miles) total cost..about $100.00 so thats your best option! theres quite a few rental agencies there..so bounce them off eachother until you get a GREAT deal! good luck!
