CA would be a Republican state without Los Angeles and SF

Yeah, but it wouldn't have very many electoral votes if you took out those two big population centers. Like Illinois without Chicagoland.

Although Orange and San Diego counties are very populous and very Republican

OC....whitest county in the US, right?

This is true- but the mainly GOP voters that reside in 'rural' and suburban California do not parallel the 'rural' and (mostly) suburban voters in places like Illinois. So on a vote by vote basis, you have to take into account geography and voter behavior.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

That's true. There's Santa Ana (hispanic), Garden Grove...even Irvine is teaming with asians. Newport Beach though...I think Kobe Bryant is the only black person who lives there.

In the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan, at the height of its influence and popularity, decided to make Anaheim a model Klan city. In 1924, the Klan secretly managed to get four of its members elected to the five-member Board of Trustees. Nine of the ten members of the police force were also Klansmen. The four Klan trustees served for nearly a year, until they were publicly exposed, and voted out in a recall election in which 95% of the population participated.[2]

Consider this cluster of adjacent counties in Illinois, all of which are relatively white. Ironically, the least white of them is named White County:

Jasper 99.15%

Cumberland 98.84%

Clark 98.78%

Effingham, 98.66%

Wayne 98.71%

Clay 98.52%

Gallatin, 98.37%

Hamilton, 98.25%

White, 98.22%

That's what a few minutes with Wikipedia could find. There are plenty of other counties with roughly similar demographics.

Although there are segments of OC that are less racially mixed than others, it is not what it used to be back when B-1 Bob Dornan was in Congress. In fact, it was an hispanic woman no less that unseated him.

Here's a favorite quote:

"Every lesbian spear chucker in this country is hoping I get defeated." — to a Los Angeles television reporter in 1992.
