Hi,

I have been waiting for a social security number for 3 weeks now but still have not received it. I applied for it on our DS-230 form when we applied. Is there any way of checking whether they are processing this or when it is likely to come? Also could I just get my social security number even if they have not printed the card? Please help!

The USCIS won't notify the SSA until your case has been processed by them after POE. This can take up to 7-8 weeks. Have you received your green card in the mail yet? If not, you can call the USCIS, if they said they have processed it then you need to go to the SSA office to find out what is going on with your SS#. If the USCIS says they haven't processed your paperwork then you need to wait until they do.

Well my welcome notice has come through and when I called up today they said that I should recieve the green card within 30 days.

As far as the SS# goes they could not help me. I called the SS and they could not help me either and they said I should wait longer. Maybe I should go to the SS Office and see whats happening. Even if they could get me my SS# number that would be great. I have been offered a job but they need my SS# to do a background check.

I just went to the SS office and they have said that they have not received anything from immigration. They say its quite common so I have to fill out an application for a new SS card which should be with me in 10 days.

See, this is why I think it's such a waste of time to check the SS card box on the DS-230. Some people are lucky enough to get their SS card in the mail but most of us aren't. I had to go several times to the SSA office and called them a lot more just to get an update. They're rude, they hate their jobs and don't help you at all unless you get on them to get the job done. It's ridiculous.

I totally agree...looking back I should have applied for the SS# on day one. I should have thought that american immigration would mess this up also.
