As soon as possible, file for you Green Card, work permitt, and travel document (if you plan to travel before your green card comes) together in one envelop. The fee for your green card is $1010 and if you apply for your work permit and travel document at the same time there is no additional fee.

Apply for your SSN. (On the AOS form, there is a place for a SSN if you have one, you can submitt it without a SSN w/o any problems).

I can't remember the details about my hubby getting a bank account. I'm pretty sure a SSN was required. Its necessary for the bank to report interest earned to the IRS.

Your driver's license may be the last thing you get. Laws vary by state; but many require you to have a green card. Other do not, check your state website and call the DMV.

Thanks for the info reeses16. I will apply for all those things at once, I get there. I hope cali law is flexible on driver license because I will be buying a car with in a month. I can not live with out a car :)

Btw can I buy the car on my fiance's name and add my name in her insurance? I will have international driving license with me and I am allowed to drive in the U.S with it.

For the bank account, depends on the bank --- we opened a bank account right away, with my husband's (USC) SSN and me as co-account holder with no SSN yet -- once i had my SSN, we added it.

Some states allow you to get the ID or driver's license without the green card. I know WA did that for me.

For the insurance, check with the insurance company - it shouldn't be an issue at all; but you never know!

Brother! It is good to hear you are planning all this. Alhamdulillah for your visa. Please keep me in your thoughts, my husband has yet to hear of his visa. I agree with the answers, apply asap and you will get it within a few weeks to 1-2 months for the SSN, work permit and if you wish, travel document. Go online and visit the DMV website for your state and check their requirements, basically you can have your driver's license within a few months, 2-3 with having the written and practial tests and paperwork preparation.

Time goes by really fast, after you come here it will be a very quick process for you and the time needed to get these documents is short, the bank account almost instant if you do the co-account holder deal with your "luvy" don't worry everything will be quick as you spend your time exploring the place

Wishing you a good flight and happy planning!

Tammy

AP: Over 1 year.

Visa: Nov 2

US Entry: Nov 13, Alhamdulillah.

I complete agree with everyone else. It all varies by state. We live in NC and this is how it goes down in this crazy state.

2. Bank Account - need SSN to open

3. Buying car - I forgot if it was because I didn't have a DL or SSN that they wouldn't put me on the title

4. Auto Insurance - I'm required by law to be on my husband's insurance even when I didn't have a valid DL

5. DL - can only be obtained with GC in hand, foreign license only good for 3 months

Thank you for all your replies. Should I get a international driving license or can I just drive on my regular Paki license for certain period of time? I was trying to open up the link for cali dmv but it wasn't working :(

I think that when you wrote "cali" you were referring to California. If so the following link is to the California DMV. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/

Get a California driver's license. The car insurance will be lower than if you use a foreign/international DL.

California Dept of Motor Vehicles:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm

The State of California does not recognize an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a valid driver license. California does recognize a valid driver license that is issued by a foreign jurisdiction (country, state, territory) of which the license holder is a resident.

So does this mean that I don't have to make an international Driving license and I can just drive on my local D.L from my home country in cali? Sounds good to me :)

Thanks.

My wife (petitioned from K-1 Visa) just got here Driver's permit in Costa Mesa, California. DMV said that her permit will expire on the expiration date of I-94 since she has no other documents stating her official presence in the US. DMV only accepts a few items for being legally present in the US (aside from USC) and the green card is one of them. Other than that, from a K-1 petition stand point, I-551 (received from the AOS interview) and EAD are the only other options to show legal presence.
