Dear Forum,

I am new to i-134 affidavid of support in which you provide sponsorship to a short term visitor of the US.

I am wondering if anyone could tell me what they think about the potential dangers when you dont know the person you sponsor 100%?

I will not be providing any monetary assistance, however, I have heard that there are major dangers involved if they dissapear into the

States and that may affect your funds.

Please let me know what to be cautious of if you have a moment.

You assistance would be appreciated greatly!

Thanks,

Andy Bauer

As a I-134 sponsor you are not responsible for an immigrants personal debts (credit cards, mortgage, student loans etc. as long as you do not cosign on these applications). You ARE responsible if the person fraudulently collects government benefits such as TANF, SSI, foodstamps (?). The exact details of when an immigrant is eligible for these benefits can vary by state, the important thing is that when they are asked about their income in the application, they have to also list the sponsor's income as an available source of income, if they still qualify the sponsor if free and clear. However, if an immigrant applies and does not include the sponsors income, the sponsor may be required to repay the payouts.

Its a big responsibility. But the keep in mind how bureaucratic the benefit system is. I can't imagine trying to figure out the process etc, complete the paper work in a non-native language. But I'm sure it does happen.
