Sick baby? It may be your formula

I have heard of many mothers saying that they were already offered a bottle in the hospital cause they didn't produce milk. Of course you don't. Your body needs time to make milk and for the first couple of days your babe will do just fine on colostrum. I cannot imagine how it is to be 'bone dry' my boobs felt like something that didn't even belong to me when my milk came in and the engorgement is painful...not to mention me leaking everytime my friends babygirl cried. That didn't just happen in the beginning but even after like seven months of Adam's birth or so. I could have kept the whole street alive on breastmilk  . I'm sorry for you who tried real hard and couldn't breastfeed.

did you find out if their babies had high bilirubin levels? or if they had gone too long of a time without urinating? or if their blood sugars had dropped?

most babies absolutely do fine with just the colostrum... its wonderfully nutritious stuff... its only lacking in fat content and babies usually have a special store of fat (brown fat) that lasts during the time it takes for milk to come in...

some babies dont... some have issues with jaundice or blood sugar... if bilirubin levels are not kept in check, the baby can wind up with brain damage (kernicterus)... so it is monitored during the baby's hospital stay... if the level goes up, the first line of treatment is to increase the fluids a baby is getting... whether it be by IV or feeding... the more the baby pees and poops, the more bilirubin is excreted instead of staying in the blood stream and crossing the blood/brain barrier... also, if blood sugars drop, then the baby needs glucose... and can again, get it via IV or increased feeding...

in general, healthcare workers are not out to sabotage breastfeeding... they are there to help...

Gaby&Talbert...I also find your words offensive that you wrote to Chrissy. Everyone here and their mother knows breastmilk is best. Hadn't you already read in the posts how many people wanted to breastfeed but for whatever reasons could not? So are you trying to make them feel worse? Your posts are coming across quite condescending.

I just can't believe sometimes how militant some people are about breastfeeding. I am very happy for every woman who is able to breastfeed, I believe it's a wonderful thing. WHen you really want to, you focus on it so much during your pregnancy so it's not like you think "yay" when you can't do it after so much effort. I have a friend who chose not to even try, sure I think she should have at least tried but it is not my place at all to ever act weird towards her or say something rude because she chose not to. Her children are fine. She is a very good mother.

I am not militant about it but women should know the benefits for their children. My wife had difficult times and I never once said she had to breastfeed. During her pregnancy she alot about it and said she wanted to breast feed the first 6 months at least. Once the baby was born I helped her in any way that I could, I helped her make sure the baby would latch on correctly. Her mother stayed with us for a month to help her. She got discouraged a few times but everyone told her not to worry and keep trying. Our baby is almost 6 months old and my wife always says it is the most wonderful experience in her life to breast feed our baby. She feels extremely close to him and says it is worth all the effort.

i am very glad that you are so supportive of your wife... it would be nice to see more husbands be that way... and i am very glad things went so well for you and your wife...

whether you intend it or not, your posts are coming across as militant... and it is offensive to assume that women are not informed... check out the baby corner and mommy corner... you will see that women are very well informed... and are very willing to share advice and information with those seeking it... women seek out information when they are pregnant (at least those that care about their infants or are not drugged out to the point they dont even realize they are pregnant)... it is available at clinics, doc offices, the internet, parents, friends, etc...

you are preaching to a group of women who are very well aware of the benefits... but unfortunately, not all were blessed with the success of you and your wife... be grateful that you were so blessed

maybe, but it hits a sore spot for me....hubbys family are very pro breastfeeding which i have nothing against, i would have LOVED to have breastfed my son, i just feel sometimes people look at you as less of a mother because shock horror you gave your child the bottle.

How does it work - the bigger your tits are, the more milk you produce?

Chrissy, how big are your tits?

Our pediatrician saw the baby every 48 hours after he went home to make sure he didn't loose too much weight at first. He lost 1 pound the first week and then gained 1 1/2 the second week. When you breat feed this is normal. Our doctor also said he needed sunlight for about 15 minutes 4 times a week when you breast feed.

Most hospitals encourage breastfeeding, the family at home needs to continue the encouragement. As a father I can't be involved as much with feeding but I do more of the other things like bathing and changing diapers. I don't miss getting up to make a bottle, I just get the baby and lay him beside his mom and he eats. It is harder for some things like going out to dinner, we have to do it between meals and we can't spend a night alone but it is just a sacrifice we are willing to make, not to mention you save a fortune when you don't have to buy formula.

I'm sure that Chrissy would be happy to tell you that information. However, first I think you should volunteer personal information about your ####### so that we are on an even keel, here.

What does my ####### have to do with breast feeding and milk production?

It was a general question - does the breast size matter when it comes to breast feeding or not?

My point is that asking someone how big their breasts are may be considered a little too personal for some. ;)

Thank you - that's all I wanted to know. It just seems logical that someone with bigger mammary

glands should be able to produce more milk, no offense.

lots of men think this... and actually, lots of women think it until they talk to their docs, moms, friends or read up in a book or online

i wish it were so simple

It was necessary for the sake of scientific inquiry.
