Pick a fight at the airport. That was my husband's strategy. It certainly made saying goodbye a lot easier. :)

You've got lots of photos. I ended up with a lot of different ones around the house and would cycle thru them with more from the stack of photos I had.

If she can't voice chat with you once you're back, get a phone card. Talking to Thi everyday for 3 hours made being away a lot easier.

But most inmportant between now and when you leave make sure you spend as much time as possible with her and her family. So stay off the comptuer!!!!!!

As usual, well thought out and conveyed Peter. I can't bring myself to sleep as much as Thuy does though! This is my only real link to the world! I'm thankful that we will be able to voice chat more often now. Thuy doesn't have to go to the Internet Cafe here anymore and I'm real thankful for that (it's not a real comfortable place).

Have you had to say goodbye a bunch of times before? If yes, then my advice is to just try REALLY hard not to think about it and get all emotional and teary up and all that at the airport, geez it doesn't help. You know your relationship is strong and you have total trust in each other, just leave it at that :D So many years we've been saying goodbye...the first time was like...actual hyperventilation for three days preceding and stuff like that, absolute bawling, not good xD Now it's just like...you pretend you're not going away for ages, I don't know. You still cry and it's still REALLY terrible on the plane once you're apart but the waiting to have to part isn't nearly as bad.

I always think about when I'll next talk to my fiance (or in your case your wife), since that's the most important thing in a relationship. Just say stuff like "I'll talk to you tomorrow" or whatever...focus on that, that you're not like...going on a sea voyage and can't communicate for months or anything.

Also, make sure you have headphones for the plane. It's happened to me more than once that I get some squeeky sort of nosy, bored woman/girl sit right next to me, see me kind of devastated but trying to get control of myself; would think it's obvious I don't really want to talk, etc. But sometimes you get these people that butt in and want to give you advice when they know nothing about you, ask lots of questions about your relationship, won't leave you alone and just make you embarassed and mad and cry all the more, grrr  I'm sure these people are trying to help, I know I'm being mean, but I hate them in those moments :( So, headphones deter that.

I said I love you, Ill call you when I get to Chicago.. Ill see you soon. :)

"you fondle my trigger then you blame my gun"

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

A full year? Why?

In any case, separation from a spouse/Fiance overseas is pure hel!. We were forced to do that after 4 years of being together everyday. I would not wish that upon anyone.

All the best for a "faster" reunion.

Thanks for the advice. This is the first time we have had to be apart (other than the 7 months preceding the marriage). I'm thankful that we do have the internet, chat, etc. I can't imagine how it was for couples before 1995 or so. Will do on the headphones!

I'll borrow that!

Welcome to the Viet Nam Visa process! We knew what it entailed before we made it official though. The main regret I have is not finishing my B.A. I'm looking into online options now. I would gladly come here and teach English while we waited, but the laws here say you must have a B.A. in addition to the TESL or TEFL certificate.

Are there other employment options available to you? If not, consider other teaching gigs in a third country, such as Indonesia, Malaysia or the PI (no BA required). Be creative in your quest.

I've considered/researched that. The conclusion I came to is I wouldn't feel comfortable taking her to most other countries. Additionally, I make pretty good money in the States. The more I read about people losing their jobs, houses, etc. the more thankful I become for what I have. Mine is pretty secure. That doesn't mean I won't take the other avenues if forced to. Being with Thuy is the priority, but I have to be able to show as well as have the ability to support her. We've talked about it and the conclusion is that we will get to the interview stage and proceed from there. Thanks for the input!

erased because I actually read the post, see you have not got a BA

Nope. I got the A.A.S. in 1994 and took a semester off. That semester has lasted almost 14 years now!

Ha, that sounds like my diet. I took Christmas off, and although the trees have been dragged to the curb and the decorations have been boxed away, it's apparently still Christmas to me. (I'm starting again after I get back from my vacation on Easter, I swear!)
